I live about 60 miles from Centralia, Washington.

No coalmines, about 50 degrees Fahrenheit today but a chilly morning with frost.

It's as close to Gehenna as you'll get in the U.S.
The Appalachian Trail passes by, near enough to smell it.
The whole area is very poor and depressed.
There's not much in or around there to interest anyone.

More accurately, a picture that State regulations are often ignored out of expediency.

Rob, Half of my life was spent in PA--The Anthracite coal mining region & the other half was spent in NW NJ. What a stark difference where you gotta go by the book or else in NJ (the draconian book) but PA is (book? What are you talking about!?!)
