Everyone should come to church with one main purpose in mind, to worship God. When everyone comes in one mind and one accord, God pours out his blessing.
I have been in many services where the Spirit is quenched. Sometimes too many get up and go outside to the bathroom, get a drink of water and so on.......too many distractions.
But other times, you can feel the prescence of the Lord. At my church you can hear Amens and Praise the Lord quite often. People raise their hands toward heaven.
While we certainly aren't pentacostal, we aren't a stiff, dried up bunch either.
I have been in churches where everyone is quite as a church mouse. This may be fine for some, not me.
As always, you can tell when something is for show and when it is sincere worship.
I may make some mad here, but I don't believe you should have a pre-planned program, sermon or whatever. I believe you should wait upon the Lord and see what He has in store.
I have been to churches and they hand out programs on what the service will be about that day. Pastors should wait on the Holy Spirit to minister.

I find that you get out of the worship service what you take into it. I worship in a reverant and quiet manner. I go to church to worship God and to hear Him speak not to have His voice drowned out by those who are around me. I don't want to hear the Amens, the Praise the Lords, I want to hear God speak to me. I am worshipping God in Spirit and in Truth, but not in a loud and boisterous manner. Worship is emotional for me, it just isn't showy.

We are told to give our alms and to pray in private, not for all the world to see. We consider those a part of our worship service. I see no reason why the rest of our worship must be done any differently. We come together to worship and honor God, not ourselves. I just simply find that I can better hear God speak when I am in a quiet reverant manner.

Having fun and being lively has it's place and time, but for me that isn't during the time when I gather together with other believers to be instructed and fed with His Word.

I just wanted to let you know that even though we are quiet it doesn't mean that we don't get it. It doesn't mean that we are not worshiping God validly and Spiritualy. Don't so quickly judge whether or not someone is worshipping correctly because of what you think you see is taking place.

This is precisely the point. Note the first post in this thread. It asks if the SBC is becoming charismatic. The underlying concern is that worship styles in certain SBC churches is becoming more outwardly joyful and that the music is being "freshened" up a bit.

Note another post mentioned "sissyfied" praise choruses. Notice the earnest defense of "traditional" worship (i.e. that which was new in the early 20th century) over non-traditional styles.

Lorelei's point is that one cannot judge the authenticity of one's worship by the style or the volume. I agree.
