My wife needs to purchase a laptop for work (she's a new realtor), and we have no idea what to look for in one, or where to get the best deal on one.

She needs xp professional as the operating system, and her broker told her that it is a good idea to replace it every three years or so, so we do not want to pay a ton for it. Where should we look to buy, and what features should we be looking for? I looked on ebay, but am a little worried about buying used on there, and the refurbished Dell's are about the same as new.

I'd suggest getting with someone in the realty business and do some talking. I'm guessing, but would think the info they deal with might be pretty memory intensive. Look for battery run time, or maybe second battery, but others that use them in that field would be much more knowledgable.

I think I'd go new, though many on ebay are new unsealed so that might be a possibility.

Here's a link to a page on PriceGrabber. It is notebooks with 15" - 15.9" screens, Windows XP Pro, 512MB, and Pentium M Centrino processors. Put in your ZIP to get the best prices including shipping.

I used PriceGrabber to find my daughter's lappy. Awesome 17" widescreen, 1 gig of RAM, DVD burner, 100 gig HD, X600 graphics card for $1249.

I have had good luck with Dell financial services on eBay.
    They are refurbed Dell machines.

I normally don't like Dell and love Apple but I think for this situation and budget, the Dell refurb might be a good idea.

I'm a bad one to ask.

    Just ordered a Dell laptop.

Received an empty box (stolen by UPS).

Dell has delayed my order by a WEEK. (something about logistics)

On top of that, my calls go to Bangladesh, and I can't understand the customer service rep.

Dell is now on the bottom of my favorites list.

    Sorry if I hijacked.

    Do you really need Windows?
Otherwise, go with Apple, they ship DHL and they still have americans answering the phones that you can understand.
They are consistantly rated #1 by consumer reports both for customer satisfaction and for their service. Most people never consider them but they are great for almost anyone.

Have you actually used one of these? I used to like Gateway but my brother just got rid of his after a terrible time with support with them.
He had a part go out that wasn't covered by the 3 year warrantee so it was toast and he had a really hard time communicating with Gateway.
