Well, I often suck on a mint or chew gum in church so as not to blow coffee breath in anyone's face. It's not as if I were riding a bike up and down the aisles, and the Lord knows I mean no disrespect.

On the other hand, my mother would have frowned on it, and my grandmother would have given me a pinch/twist on the arm. So i will admit there can be more than one opinion.

    That's "puh-leeze!" :type:

Actually, this has got me thinking. If gum chewing is acceptable, why not a cheeseburger?

Because I know I can chew gum without anyone really knowing - but they'd sure hear the crinkling of the cheeseburger wrapper!

The only problem I see is getting those ketchup stains on my bible. But, hey, I like to bring in big gulps of Pepsi, so......

This just goes to show (along with Pamela's answer) that we don't always know the reason behind why other's do the things they do.

    Bubble-blowing aside.

Medical conditions aside , ( most pew-sitters do not have these maladies ) when I see rows of munchers -- something's amiss .

I remember being in junior choir [grades 4 to 6] and the director was the pastor's wife, a rather rigid lady. If she saw anyone make a chewing motion she would say, "___, go spit your gum out." At one practice session, she caught 2 or 3 at the same time, after we got through the song, she told them to get rid of it, but then she added, "Now I like to chew gum, and in fact I have some in my mouth right now-- but I'm not chewing it." Ain't that something called "hypocrisy?" [Regarding the word "ain't," she said "I hate that word!" ]

Aside story: this PW was also a choir teacher in our public school system. My older sister went with the youth choir on a mission trip to Puerto Rico at a time when she was beginning to be something of a young radical. She came home from that trip, mostly refusing to talk about it. But she learned before summer was over that this PW, who was also on that trip as a parent/sponsor, had been transferred to the high school and would be the teacher in my sister's choir class. She went to the counselor and transferred out of that to some other class (drama, I think). Something happened between the 2 of them that we-- or at least, I-- never found out about. But it seems inherant that it was a conflict of the conservatively rigid v. the young play-it-loose. Very soon my sister refused to even go to church any more. Whatever really led to all this, it was probably more than chewing gum while singing, which has to be regarded as minor by comparison.

Mrs. L, I sure hope you're still around and you read this board. But if you ain't, may you keep unchewed gum in your mouth for the ages.

Chewing gum in the church is okay as long as the person brings enough for everyone.

(Someone probably already said that, but I'm too lazy to read through the whole thread.)

Lazy is one of my thousands of middle names. My idea of morning exercise is to hit the 10 minute snooze button repeatedly when the alarm goes off. Okay, everyone, it's time to do hand thwacks. BZZZZZ (thwack). 3 more... BZZZZZ (thwack). 2 more...
