That's true. And sometimes that influence is deserved because of the man's wisdom and spirituality. If I were the pastor, I'd try to find the most spiritual, wisest man inthe church and seek his counsel. But if a man came to me first, I'd wonder if he had an agenda. I'd keep an eye on him until I was certain of his motives.

We were always taught as a pastor to be friendly to all, but familiar with none. When I went to a new church, I always sought out a reliable deacon with whom I could confide. It made for a wonderful relationship in the church so long as that friendship was not obvious to all.

I think this is why we have ministerial associations...a tension release club.

The other mechanism I had was going to the church at 2 in the morning, pulling out all the stops on the organ and playing away for an hour. Although I did make the mistake one morning on not checking the pa system. It was on and I forgot that it went directly into an old gal's house who loved church, but couldn't attend in person owing to a disability. Good job I only played hymns! Her only complaint was that I hit a few bad notes.

    Cheers,

    Jim

That reminds me of when I worked at a Christian camp during the summer and the person who was my roommate would often bring his banjo when we cleaned the chapel. One time he brought it and played it during our break time. One day the PA system was turned on from the chapel to the dining hall and the camp director commented on what a nice concert they had while they were eating. From that point on we checked to make sure the PA system was turned off.
