I admit that I don't know all the customs of the time, but I have a hard time swallowing this explanation.

Our song leader doesn't leap all over the stage while leading the songs. But, maybe your song leader does things a little differently. [IMG]

what is glorifying to God about singing the same 15 words over and over and over again. what is glorifying to God about singing the same 15 words over and over and over again. what is glorifying to God about singing the same 15 words over and over and over again. what is glorifying to God about singing the same 15 words over and over and over again. what is glorifying to God about singing the same 15 words over and over and over again.

catch my drift. it just kinda gets on my nerves and to be honest with you by the end i'm thinking about anything and everything but worshiping the Lord. mostly i'm just thinking about why this song with 15 words just lasted 30 minutes.

Al the classic people have died to make room for the new. You do not put new wine in old wineskins. They won't handle it. They will break.

So it is so often with those who are hard.

Do you know the difference between CCM and hymns? 30 years.

When the hymns starting being sung again after about 1000 years of no music the hard folks thought it was of the devil. They were talking about what you would call hymns today.

The Jews did not like it when Jesus came.

When you sing "Nothing but the blood of Jesus", you're singing that particular phrase over and over and over? What's the difference?

Oh, so it's just a personal preference. That's different.

Revelation 4:8b "Day and night they never stop saying: 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is and is to come.'"

Guess the worship of the Lord in Heaven will get on your nerves too, huh?

As for dancing, which goes hand in hand with many aspects of music, the description of David in Scripture defends itself.

David leapt, he did not swing his hips provocatively or act aggresively.

Certain types of music are hypnotic, different than relaxing, and they often result in an new age type of swaying.

Others have a carnal aspect that provoke physically provocative or aggresive actions. If you don't believe that look at the majority of violent movies and the way music is used.

In "When We Were Young" there is a scene toward the end where they make a last charge. With the scenes of death and violence they put somewhat relaxing music. It confuses the mind, to a degree, and for that reason makes an impact. But most of the time a certain style of music accompanies certain scenes.

Some moral music can be made immoral by the way the words are sung. Marilyn Monroe singing to JFK for instance.

Moral "Classic hymns" do not lend themselves to such behaviour. Not because they are old, but because of their make up. Just as letters are not inherently moral or immoral, nor are notes moral or immoral. However, letters can be combined to make immoral words and so can notes.

Music is good because of its intrinsic value, not because of when or where it was written.

Some CCM is good, some is not.

You guys know all this already. But it is just good practice for me to get my thoughts into black and white. [IMG]

The "standard old hymns" were "new" once upon a time. And there were, I'm sure, stodgy legalistic sorts who were "against" them then.

Some of us are not crazy about CCM songs - but that's a matter of opinion and taste - and that's all it is. CCM songs can glorify God just as well as the "old hymns". God gets glory out of a worshipping heart and not from the song. Whether the song is played with a piano and organ or an electric guitar and drums is irrelevant.

Read Psalm 136. You will find the phrase "His love endures forever" repeated 26 times consecutively.

    Over and over. And over.

Once again, I'm simply arguing--FROM SCRIPTURE--my point. If it's going to bother you, then be bothered with Psalm 136.

Blended Worship captures the best of both worlds, as it were...

A church that comes to church expecting to meet with and Worship God will express that Worship according to that churches unique personality...

I agree that David did not Dance in a provocative manner...

Yet, even though it was not sensually provocative it still provoked Michal...

And, even though David was leading a procession he was obviously beside himself with Joy, demonstrably so, that the Ark was coming home.

While being at the lead was David's Place as King...

There is no scripture that I am aware of that David was "The Leader" of this particular procession.

I doubt he was, because the care and transportation of The Ark was the responsibility of the Priests and Levites.

still waiting on the lyrical and scriptural superiority of "nothing but the blood" over "shout to the Lord"...

Let's use it all...we do. Old, ancient, and new.

But it is "broke." On the whole, people my age (19 - 39) are an unreached people group in our own nation. This problem is much bigger than the kinds of music we sing, or whether or not drama and dance are appropriate modes of worship.

We sing contemporary music here as well as hymns. No one gets up to go to the bathroom during "those old hymns" or "those 7-11 songs". (On a side note, it is very rare for us to use 7-11's in worship)

    I don't wear a tie.

We have drama 4 or 5 times a year.

No dance yet, but I have some arts students that use dance, sign and painting in worship at the university.

Don't tell me what God can and can't use. Nothing But the Blood, A Mighty Fortress, and Fairest Lord Jesus are great... and I love them. I still have fond memories of singing these songs as I grew up. But Shout to the Lord, How Deep the Father's Love for Us, and Beautiful One are additional songs that this generation will be looking back on with fondness as they continue to sing in churches across the nation. One of my seniors in our youth group was asked the other night what her favorite song from church was. She thought long and hard and said, "It would have to be between Shout to the North and that hymn... um... Rescue the Perishing." I asked her why, and she said, "Because missions are so close to my heart. I've got both of those lyrics in places of my home to remind me of the importance of reaching out with Christ's hands and walking with His feet."

I had tears in my eyes, and felt good that I may have had an impact. Pray for this young lady as she goes into missions in college.

The issue is not the music we sing, or the ministries we offer, but the heart and attitude behind these things. I lead both types oof worship as I lead our church, because I believe in both as viable arms of worship. It is all about Him, right? Not about your personal preference?

With all of this talk of "the flesh", people forget that the flesh is not just the physical body, but basically the non-physical sins of the heart and mind. The sin the traditional styles have been associated with, for instance, is cultural smugness and pride, in part because of their 'contemplative' makeup. Neither way is without sin. The others here are right, in that making physical pleasure the sin in itself is purely Platonic philosophy, and not biblical. And even with the context given for David's dancing, the fact that God accepted it still shows that this philosophy is wrong.
And to repeat, "the old paths" does not refer to 100 years ago from OUR time. The older church used the same reasoning on the hymns when they were new.

We're pretty evil, I guess. We had a girl in our group dance a ballet to the song "Facedown" performed by our student choir. She danced a ballet with a crown of thorns, and placed them at a throne. Tastefully done, moving, powerful, and a great reminder of God's majesty. Many of our adults were in tears at that point.

We have three student praise bands, and two student praise teams...they are excited about leading in worship...not performing, but leading in worship.

they won't respond to the lyrics as a stand alone feature. the song is wrong because it's not the right style. i could be surprised, but i doubt i will be. i'm not sure the issue has ever been the suitability of lyrics in alot of the songs, but the "beat" and "style" of the song. i don't agree, and i'll never be asked to lead worship in an ifb church because of it. you know what, i'm ok with that. I love songs that repeat. Here's one from Handel.

    Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
    Hallelujah! Hallelujah! (repeat)

For the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth.
    Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
    (repeat)

For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
    Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
    Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! (repeat)

    The kingdom of this world
Is become the kingdom of our Lord,
    And of His Christ, and of His Christ;
And He shall reign for ever and ever,
For ever and ever, forever and ever,

King of kings, and Lord of lords,
King of kings, and Lord of lords, (repeat)
    And Lord of lords,
    And He shall reign,
And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings, forever and ever,
    And Lord of lords,
    Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings! and Lord of lords! (repeat)
And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings! and Lord of lords!
    Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
    Hallelujah!

...and then there are those classic hymns. Most have 3-5 verses with same chorus repeating after each verse.

    He Lives
    There's Power In the Blood
    Follow On
It Is Well With My Soul
    Blessed Assurance

I don't see anything wrong with these examples of repeating the words over and over again.

Weird Al likes repetitive lyrics. His lyrics to the tune of George Harrison's "Got My Mind Set On You" are funny, but probably wouldn't work in church! [IMG]

I guess it all depends on what your repeating. Some words are worth repeating, others are not.

oops......"Sorry, the time in which you may edit your message has elapsed."

Anyways if it's any help: the songs following the one in my post above were To God Be The Glory and And Can It Be. Also that afternoon we had O The Deep Deep Love Of Jesus, Jesus Loves Me, and a few others...
