This subject came up in SS this morning. Here are some verses.

Gen 1:27 So God created man in His [own] image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Gen 5:3 And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.

Gen 9:6 "Whoever sheds man's blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man.

In Gen 1:27, man is created in God's image.

After the fall, Seth is begotten in Adam's image.

Captital punishment is instituted by God because man is created in God's image.

    In whose image are we?

Well unless God has male pattern baldness I'd guess that we are in His image spiritually and Dad's image physically but always open to correction.

    Clearly an excellent question.

Bonhoeffer titled the last chapter of Cost of Discipleship, "The Image of Christ."

Rom 8:29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

He then shows how Adam's sin was to become like God in his, Adam's, own power, i.e., "deciding and acting for himself." Thus his fall.

Bonhoeffer's conclusion of this chapter, and thus his entire discussion of the cost of discipleship, and costly grace is this:

Eph 5:1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.

    A good read, highly recommended.

    :applause: Thanks for responding guys!

I'm not sure if I'm explaining it right. Adam was created in God's image, but the question in SS was are all people since the fall of Adam, now created in Adam's fallen image or are we still in God's image? At least I think that was it. I'm confusing myself now.

I think we we are both in Adam's image and God's image. God's image may be marred by the fall, but it's still there, since it's well after the fall that God gives as the reasoning behind his command for capital punishment that "God made man in his own image." And James 3:9 confirms it.

We are also in Adam's image, although I'm not sure I'd say we are created in Adam's image. What likeness we have to Adam comes because we descend from him.

I agree, if Adam was made in God's image then God's image and Adam's image are one in the same image.

I agree. What some were saying in SS class was that after the fall, we are not in God's image anymore, but in Adam's image.

This is a common calvinistic view of anthropology that tries to argue that augustinian original sin is correct.

Ooookay. I kinda figured from the discussion in class that they were going toward original sin.
Well, we'll see what happens next Sunday. We all agreed that we would study it out. I don't think they'll like what I have to say. :) It won't be the first time though.

As has been stated we were created in God's image which speaks of our nature including soul and spirit. Our body comes from Adam and Eve through human procreation. That image is clearly affected by the fall. It is portrayed in Romans 5 and I Cor 15:45 as a contrast from the fallen man to the redemptive work of Christ.

1 Cor 11:7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.

James 3:8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

I think these verses shed some light on the subject and affirm that we are made in God's image.
