Agreed. Look at my post again, after I (finally) finished editing it, :type: so that it would (actually) say what I really wanted it to say.

I never slip up and say any of these words, and probably haven't done so, for nearly forty years. :saint:

Didn't Mathhew say that Fool was an offensive word in Matthew 5:22?

Several of those words are not 'curse' words at all, but simply have become offensive because of the way they are used in our culture.

I was listening to some old songs recently and there is a delightful one called "Am I Blue?" Part of it goes:
    "Was I gay, 'til today?
    Now he's gone
    and we're through,
    am I blue?"

Can't say that today. 'gay' has changed its meaning.

My husband is Australian. Since he came here to live, he has been in a partial state of shock at how many perfectly decent words Americans have now used to mean something crude. On the other hand, there are a few words which are perfectly fine to me and which send chills up his spine because they are crude language in Australia. I try to remember not to use them!

In another vein, the word 'fool' in the Bible is not simply someone who is behaving foolishly or being silly. Rather, it was a very serious insult and had to do with one's relationship with God. "The fool says in his heart, 'there is no God.'" Etc.

My dad told us, when we were growing up, that anyone who used crude language simply was deficient in English and we ought to feel sorry for them and not act or speak like them, since we had good educations.

Still, when Chris spilled an entire bowl of yeast mix all over the floor (I make three to four loaves at a time, so it was a lot of water and butter and sugar and yeast!), and then went into his room and threw up all over, that 'big D' did come out! But it's very, VERY rare. Once a year under extreme circumstances, maybe....

I don't consilder 'hell' a swear word, but simply a place created for the devil. There is no need to use it in any other context.

What I find FAR more offensive than any of the words listed is when someone uses the word "God" or "Christ" or "Jesus" as an expletive. I would rather hear any of the words listed in the OP than hear my Lord's name or a reference to Him used that way.

edited to correct lyrics of song...

I agree, Helen, that from our point of view, "God" or "Christ" or "Jesus" used as expletives are more offensive than (say) "hell". But from God's perspective, the "expletive" is in the heart, regardless of the actual word(s) that come out of the mouth.

Amen. Your Father is wise :1_grouphug:

Imho, this Poll applies more to men than women. Food for thought- Since name calling and swearing is unacceptable behavior at work, why would a grown man display this childish behavior in is personal life, around his family? It wouldn't be second nature, especially if his occupation also involves interacting with children and/or women. Hopefully, as we grow in Christ, swearing and name calling is minimal (at best).

1 Cor 13:11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

No, it doesn't say it is an offensive word.

Nor if it did would "offense" equate "curse".

Furthermore, I am not in danger of hell fire, how bout you? (Note to any mods, I am not questioning Faithgirl's salvation, just make any obvious application. Thanks.)

Why would you ask such a question, especially when talking to a female? She did nothing to deserve this.
    You ARE questioning her salvation.

    BACK OFF!

Joe. You are having issues with comprehension.

If I say I am not questioning someone's salvation, then I am not. Period. I can't spell that out any clearer, though for your sake I wish I could.

It was a rhetorical question. I have no doubt about her salvation (for I don't even know her). I was pointing out the obvious issue with the verse she was using in light of the issue of hell fire.

Back off? Get a clue Joe. Your chivarly and wannabe heroism is not needed, I am not attacking anyone.

Her question is, as you can see, is whether Fool is an offensive word concerning this verse. That's it. No Hellfire
    Really?
Again, she asked a question concerning the use of the word Fool in this context, it has nothing to do with Hellfire. You brought that into the mix with the intention of question her salvation.
    Whatever

    Again, BACK OFF

Your posts demeaning women and/or promoting child abuse won't go unnoticed any longer. If that's your definition of a heroine, then so be it.
You edited your post(s) to me omitting the personal attacks, that's very good. Maybe you are beginning to put away childish things :applause:
BTW, Fun with Dick and Jane is a good book. I would still enjoy reading it, no shame here. And know I won't place undue emphasis on your sarcasm by quoting you unless absolutely necessary. Childish sarcasm never helps your credibility. It only fuels disbelief in your words, especially when you walk such a thin line.

Many years ago, a golf foursome included a young pastor. He hit a terrible shot and one of our group asked him, "Preacher, when you hit a bad shot, do you ever cuss?"

"Naw," he said, "I don't cuss. But when I spit, the grass turns brown."
