Please pray for my daughter (college age attending Liberty).

I'll be leaving with her early tomorrow morning and going to Children's Hospital [Philadelphia] for a pre-op work-up in preparation for spinal fusion surgery due to advancing scoliosis.

Surgery is planned for the 23rd.

    • Pray that the right people to do the surgery.
    • Pray for no infection post op.
    • Pray for a good rehabilitation and speedy recovery.
    • Pray that God might use episode in her life to further his kingdom.

    I'll keep you updated.

    Prayers.

I did an in-service project on this subject a few months and want to share this informative link that lists some of the best alternative methods to fusion surgery that you might not be aware of:

We took a SEPTA train to Philly early this AM.

    We did a lot today.

We visited anesthesia, my daughter had blood drawn, had numerous x-rays and then we saw the surgeon, who talked with us for about 45 minutes answering all our questions and fears.

It will be an almost a full spinal fusion for a multidimensional scoliosis. He expects surgery to take much of the day. She starts rehab on day 2. She'll be in the hospital for 5 days.

After a late lunch we went to the brace ship to fit her for her last back brace (this one is made of a softer plastic than all her previous braces and a light pink color).

We finished early enough to make the last afternoon train out of Philly and then picked up my grandson from grade school and the three of us finished the day going to the movies.

I just finished reading to him. It's been a long day.

Surgery is next Wednesday the 23rd.

    Many thanks for your prayers.

    Rob

I'm going to talk to a friend of mine on Wednesday to ask her about her daughter's surgery. I believe it was very similar to what your daughter is going to go through. I'll see if there is anything in particular that helped her out....

It's been a long but good day.

We left the house at 4:30AM

We arrived in the surgical reception area at 6AM

My daughter went into surgery at 7:30 and finally left the OR at 2:25

There are a few hurdles she still needs to cross but my wife and I are surprised how well she looks.

She's on a morphine drip to help control the pain but remarkably awake and alert.

In the post-op spinal x-ray, her back is probably straighter than mine …the before and after comparisons are remarkable!

Lots of people have been praying. Thanks for your prayers.

I've been praying for her and am glad to hear the surgery went well today. :godisgood: Now for recovery! Is this surgery a one time deal that will permanently fix this for her? I'm hoping that is the case!

Made a mental note when you first posted this to have my second daughter checked at her next physical...she had a mild case when she was younger and I didn't think to ask the new doctor to make sure to do that check during physicals when we moved. She seems fine, but since I know nada about it and it sounds like nothing to mess with, I'll be making extra sure to have them look!

Thanks for posting your request so we could pray with you for your daughter and also for you as her daddy. Even when things go perfect, parents also have a hard time when our kiddos do.

That is one incredible x-ray!! I can see where the rods are straight but the screws rotate towards the left as you go down her spine. I can see that her lower spine is still towards the right a little under the rods but man, that is SOOOOOO straight compared to what I imagine it was!!! Isn't it amazing how they can do things like that?????

Post op day 1 – pain management is the chief concern still.

She spent the day watching old movies – tomorrow we'll do a "Lord of the Ring's" marathon at her request.

She's beginning to drink clear fluids, water and apple juice – perhaps tomorrow she'll progress to jello and broth.

She sat up today – maybe tomorrow she'll get out of bed.

It's my night with her tonite in the hospital - she's still my baby

The Lord's been so good to us!

Sounds like she's progressing!! I know what you mean about her still being your baby. I spent LOTS of time with my baby in the hospital last year. It is hard, isn't it?

Had to wince just looking at that picture. Owie! Sure hope she feels better soon. That definitely is a straight looking spine now!

Does she have a tiny build, btw? Just curious from looking at the x-ray.

Three cheers for hospital jello! When one hasn't eaten in a while, it's the best tasting stuff on earth.

She slept like a baby last night - up every hour and a half, lol.

Small build, well she was 5' 11 1/2 before surgery
We've been trying to fatten her up for the last two weeks and got her up to 110 lbs. (both my wife and I were thin and tall at her age - unfortunately that changed as we grew older)
The Doc said straighting the spine put her over 6 foot.

    That's definitely like a baby!

The clearness of the x-ray is what led me to ask, with no shadowing around internal structures. Unlike me. WAY WAY WAY too much shadowing.

I'm still praying for pain control. Hopefully she can sleep like a...someone who took someone else's very spoiled kids to the zoo for a day and came home to a sink full of dirty dishes and a pile of laundry. THAT would be a good sleep!

Another tough night last night with pain and nausea

They tackled her nausea with a number of meds that seemed to fix the problem.

She felt well enough to eat an ice pop – her first food since Tuesday evening.

By 11:00 she was sitting up and smiling.

Physical Therapy stood her up and she walked down the hall and back. What an accomplishment!

I think we've turned the corner. I'm guessing we'll take her home late Monday or Tuesday.
