    In 1Samuel 21:1-9

Why was it important for God to show us that David ate the showbread?

I have some ideas why I think, but would really like to hear other responses. This has me really thinking about it.

So that God could show us the true nature of the Laws He gave his people. If the Old Testament reader didn't pick up on it, Jesus made the point that is recorded in three of the four gospels:

    Matthew 12
2 But when the Pharisees saw this, they said to Him, "Look, Your disciples do what is not lawful to do on a Sabbath."
3 But He said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he became hungry, he and his companions,
4 how he entered the house of God, and they ate the consecrated bread, which was not lawful for him to eat nor for those with him, but for the priests alone? "

See also Luke 6:2-4 and Mark 2:24-26.

The Law was made for man, not man for the Law. (Of course this runs contrary to much "conservative" thinking in the church today, so feel free to ignore it. :D )

I think that we are being shown that God was not offended by this violation of the ceremonial regulations because it was necessary to do so to meet the needs of his hungry people.

In Matthew 12, Jesus was showing the Pharisees that God Himself allowed violations of His own law in certain circumstances, so why did the Pharisees demand that Jesus disciples not break their own man-made rules when they were hungry.

So why did David wear the ephod? He was not
of the tribe of Levi! And why did he offer sacri-
fices to our God, and our God was pleased with
them, when his predecessor made offerings and
our God was not pleased? Why are David's sons
    specifically called Cohenim or priests?

    More interesting things to ponder.

Oh, and yes, before anyone asks, I know why. 8o)

    Sherrie,

I love Star Trek--and there is a line that Scotty(your future from Scottish land???) tells Captain Kirk--

"I need more time, Captain! The Transportor is shot! The Phaser bank is ka-put! There are no Photon Torpedoes! And the Matter/Anti-Matter tranducers---Captain, Sir! If I had more time I could possibly get a little more speed from the Warp engines--but they may blow any minute!!"

But the Scottish enginner always came through for his favorite Captain, didn't he?? I mean, warp speed right before the Klingon's fire the Disrupters!!

Give the Southern Baptist Preacher(engineer) a little more time to clean up his library and look for those books on the shewbread---then the Warp drive will leave all the Impulse Engines "High and dry!!"

    Your Southern Baptist preacher buddy!

Look who David is fleein' from--Saul
Look at where David flees to--the Temple
David is running away from Saul but at the very same time--he is running toward the Temple. Runnin' from the presence of evil--running toward God's presence!!

The Bible says that we are to flee the very presence of evil. In order to flee evil--there must be a runnin' toward Jesus!

David-In his retreat from evil is hungry and weary. The Temple--a perfect place to rest! A perfect place to hide! A perfect place to eat! David is in need of "Daily Bread"

The Shewbread is a picture of the Lord Jesus Christ--our daily bread. David with that Shewbread pictures our fellowship with Jesus--our essentials for daily survival found in Him. Reclining and fellowshippin' with Jesus amist a world that is gone wild!

In the world's wilderness--Christ is there offering spiritual food--a table in the presence of the enemy.--no wonder David writes the Psalm 23--Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies.

The Shewbread was to be set on the table--on a continual basis--there was always enough there for the Priests to eat when they got hungry--oooohhhh--but we are Priests in God's presence--and Jesus is always continually there for us to feast on when we get spiritually hungry.

The thing about it is this--David could keep comin' back again and again to eat that bread knowing that the bread will always be there. Jesus and His fellowship will always be there--"I am with you always." "I am the bread of Life"

David's very survival hinged on eating that bread! He came to Ahimelech with a message--"If I don't get a chunk of that bread--I'm gonna die!!!!!"

David shows that the Lord of the Sabboth is also Lord of the other six days. It was a daily Sabboth that was in his heart. David didn't have to wait till the Sabboth--to get a chunk of that bread--he could have the Sabboth right then and there---did you know, dear friend!! You don't have to wait till the Sabboth to get in on God!! You can get in on God by gettin' in on God's Sabboth---the Lord Jesus Christ!! Everytime you open the word before you and start reading---you're eatin' Sabboth Day Bread!!! You get relief in the rest--and energy to go on and fight another day---because look at the verses that follow---get the picture--in verse 7--David now has eaten that Shewbread--a picture of God's presence! A picture of Christ in you the hope of glory!! But David, in eating that bread is energized for the next battle--a battle going on with a fella named Doeg---David asks Ahimelech--"Where can I get a weapon??!!" And the Priest(who pictures the ministry of the Holy Spirit!!!) says, "Son!! The only sword in the arsenal not being used is the one you took off of Goliath! Remember that day down in the valley of Elah Why, there it is--behind the ephod!!(another picture of Jesus!!)" So, David goes to the Shewbread for energy--and then he goes to the Ephod for his soldiering equipment.

But he had to eat the Shewbread before he could pick up that sword. Fellowship comes before the battle. The fellowship is there to celebrate victory in the upcoming battle that is yet to be fought!!

There!! The Chief Engineer Scotty has just flipped the switch to go from impulse drive to Warp!! Captain Kirk now says, "Warp Nine, Mister Sulu!!"

    Your Southern Baptist Preacher Friend,
    Blackbird

PS--As I recieve more information--I will write more information!!

Don't expect to do battle with Doeg--until you've eaten the Shewbread! Unless there is that fellowship with Jesus--there can be no showmanship against the wiles of the devil!! Eat the bread--win the battle!!

WOW! Much more than I expected.

I was thinking about the showbread being a whole different message in this part of the Bible, than the other places in the Bible, and you certainly showed me it was.

No matter what obstacles we put ourselves in, God sure make a Way for us, don't He.

What a beautiful picture of this scripture.

What time did you say church sevice was Captain Kirk?

The Ephod?? I forgot to read up on that part!! Abiyah will be miffed off if nobody knows but her--so Captain Kirk will venture out one more time into the "Neutral Zone"--to look for the Ephod---its a beautiful picture of the Lord Jesus Christ--all layed out in gold--the most valuable thing on Earth--to picture Jesus--the most valuable person in GloryLand!! Abiyah--lets educate the boys and girls!!

    Abiyah and Backbird,

Not really sure what the question is but I had read at one time it might have been the image. Like an image that was set up in the sanctuary.

I had also read there are many different definitions for the ephod. But in this paticular one it was not meant for it to be a piece of clothing. It was something that was carried.

I had originally thought perhaps it was Gods protection. But that would have been the breastplate.

I will try to dig up where I originally read about the ephod and post it. Give me a fwew minutes.

So then I am missing the whole thing here. What I thought isn't what I thought.

I was thinking more like maybe an image of those angels; charabaums (?). Something moltened. For this paticular scripture.

Because the sword was wrapped in something else. And then placed behind the Epod. As if it were being protected.

Now I knew that in other places it is clothing, or something worn.

mountainrun I am not so sure that the picture you are showing fits this scripture. I am going to have to go back and study this somemore.

Now I am confused. Be back in a bit. I am going to go stew on it for a while.
