The scriptural requirements listed for the character of deacons.

We have a few deacons of good character who have a divorce in their past.

Yes. We have women who serve as deacons.

They are selected through non-public written nominations from the congregation, a prayerful examination of the character, maturity and commitment (including regular and faithful financial commitment) of the candidates by a deacon ordination committee, and then by individual election by the congregation based on the recommendation of the deacon ordination committee. The process is conducted very discreetly and on the average, only about 25% of the nominations make it through the process enough to even know they are being considered for the office of deacon through an invitation to meet with the committee.

Servant model. The church council serves as "the board of directors."

    No Deacons

When the church I attend was being formed as a mission and they came to the point of discussing deacons someone asked, "Has anyone been in a church where the deacons were anything other than a political body that caused trouble?"

    The response was, "No."

"Then let's not have a board of deacons."

And we do not ... no deacons but a happy, loving congregation where everyone is a memeber of one or more ministry groups that minister to our own and to our community. :1_grouphug:

I will add another post later about women deacons and that it is scriptual to have a woman deacon.

    Women Deacons - Phoebe

The book of Romans, chapter 16, verse 1, in the case of Phoebe, shows that one of the Greek words to describe her, Diakonos, is the same word used in Paul's letter to Timothy, meaning Deacon.

Paul, when speaking of Phoebe in Ramans 16:1 calls Phoebe a deacon. He uses the word "diakonos" which is the same word Paul uses in Timothy when speaking of deacons. So it is obvious that Phoebe was a deacon in the church at Cenchrea.

For those who don't have deacons in your church, who serves the elements at your communion services?

    Who shares elements

    Zenas:

As I said, we are small. We stand in a circle and the pastor takes the elements, says the words we are all familiar with, the words that Christ spoke, and then breaks the bread and hands one half to the person on his right and the other on his left. Each person breaks a small piece off, turns to the person next to them and as they hand them the breas they say, "The body of Christ broken for you."

The grape juice is done in a similiar manner with the person telling the one next to them, "The blood of Christ shed for you."
