I have a dear friend who was born with many physical problems. She is now 18 and is three feet tall, and 35% deaf. She used to be 50% deaf, but with hearing aids she can hear pretty good. Her family learned sign language and she could lip read. I can be all the way across the room from her, get her attention, and mouth anything and she knows exactly what I said. It was during the time she was very young many people in church took classes in ASL to talk to her. But like any thing it needs to be practiced. Yes, they do have their own culture, just like ths Spanish people in my church, but because we both serve the same God, and have a desire to understand each other, we are learning. We do not have a apnish minister, but dear brother Santos interprites the sermons when we have other Spanish people in services.
You know, I realize there are many diffrences in any culture, but God can do what we can't. If He calls a hearing man to pastor the deaf, He will guide him, and because God's will is involved it will be accoplished. Just like with the missionaries that go to a forgien feild. Without God they never would have been able to do that.
And if God calls a man, no matter hearing or non hearing, God will provide. He can do what none else can do. People that are often forgotton just because of a language barrier, at least around here, seem hungrey for God's word. Although our Catholic church has put a dent in our outreach to the hispanic, we still see folks saved every once in a while. God loves all people, and where there is a need, He will provide.
In my church we do not have a deaf ministry, but that's because we have no deaf members. We had one lady that was deaf visit and my friend interprited for her.
We have one pastor. He oversees all of us. Youth, kids, singles, seniors, middleaged, married, blue, green, spanish, white, and black. It don't matter. He loves us all, and speaks from God's word to all of us weekly. I've never heard of having so many preachers in one church for so many diffrent things! I guess maybe in large churches it's needed.
But remember, no matter what language these people speak, ASL, Spanish, English, Chineese,French, whatever, with God all things are possible. God dosn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called. Phillipians 4:13 KJB! It's still holds up now in any situation!
