It's quite a stretch to miss paying one's self-employment tax. How can one miss this? And, this guy is going to be the Treasury Secretary and doesn't even know something this fundamental to the tax code? If you and I were to try this scheme on the IRS we'd be under the jail because failure to pay self employment tax on so large amount of money, I would think, would constitute fraud. So now we have a liar running the Treasury Dept. How nice, but typical of our government.

    Not correct.

He was audited in 2006 and required to pay taxes and penalties for 2003 and 2004.

No doubt at that time he was also aware himself that he made the same "mistake" on his 2001 and 2002 tax returns and that he owed additional taxes and penalties for those years.

Geithner voluntarily amended his tax returns for years 2001 and 2002 after Obama expressed his intent to nominate him.

So he still knew that he had not paid his "fair share" of taxes at least since 2006 and most likely would not have paid them even to this date if he were not nominated by Obama.

This is not the behavior of an ethical person.

Reading more of the story you are correct... He still wasn't asked several times but you are correct he would not have paid the 2001 and 2002 taxes if he wasn't nominated. The Senate and the House have the power to deny his confirmation. If he makes it, it is not just Obama's fault. That is the beauty of a democracy, shared responsibility and blame (except for Bush  )...

    Of course he knew.

Voluntarily paying '01 and '02 after Obama talks to him tells us all we need to know about this tax cheat's ethics. If Obama stands behind his nomination, it tells us all we need to know about Obama's ethics, as well.

Obama knew this when he gave him the appointment. If he gets the job then the blame should be shared with the 99 people in the Senate (since Fraken can't vote even though Coleman moved on to a new job)...
