If churches neglect the Holy Spirit and His power...that body could be headed toward the grave. Some churches have the spirit of religion and not the Spirit of God.

I can testify without a doubt that Tom is very correct about charismatics and speaking tongues in our church. If they were there, I would not be. It was hard enough getting used to the "Amens", raising hands, and pastors without robes when I switched from the Presbyterian church 33 years ago.

Every Christian is in possession of the Holy Spirit, and received Him at salvation, therefore, a Christian cannot be possessed by a demon. He is our guide, conscience, convictor, and prays for us as an intercessor. He molds us to the image of Jesus daily. I do believe we can be filled with the Holy Spirit as God wills for His purposes, but He is always in us.

What the Holy Spirit is not is a magic or circus act. He is also not a medium for some money hungry TV preacher to peddle his books. There are two things that angered Jesus here on earth. One was the hypocracy of the Pharisees. The other was the moneychangers at the temple, in modern day terms, making a buck off the Word of God. We all sin, but I would just as soon avoid those that visibly angered the Lord. It is a travesty the shows that are on TBN and like channels that make a mockery of the Lord, Scripture, and minsitry by selling religious objects, stage fake healings, fake speaking in tongues, congregations laughing during the sermon, and other such antics. Robert Tilton was the master. Sometimes one cannot blame a lost world thinking we are some kind of nut jobs because their image of being a Christian comes from shows like this.

I am not one to say that tongues are a dead gift, however, the evidence suggests it was used during that period of history by the Lord, again, for His purposes. For tongues to be from the Lord, it has to be a message edifying to the church. There has to be a messenger and an interpreter. Has anyone ever seen an interpreter on one of these shows that had an edifying message?

God gave us all a brain, we can all read, and maybe it is time we started using those gifts. The local church is in bad shape. Young people are leaving in droves. The ones remaining are older than I am by a generation. Those in their 50s and 60s are considered young people of a congregation.

Instead of playing games with these idiots on TV, it is time to do what the last verses of Matthew tells us to do. Go, teach, and baptize. May God have mercy on the souls of people who use His name to fatten their bank accounts and wear large diamond rings while lost souls are dying daily.

Maybe that is the difference in the Baptist churches that have accepted the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. They are grounded in truth! Now that they have allowed the Holy Spirit to control the service...we have Spirit and truth!

I have never been to a congregation where tongue(message from God) in a service was not interpreted. It was also only one...not several at at time. I am not saying that there are not false manifestations out there..there is! But there are also false preachers, teachers etc. Do we throw that away too because someone is a fake?

Paul's admonition in Corinthians about having an interpreter was not about God speaking to the people through tongues. In the first century the churches were largely multi-cultural and many languages were spoken. Paul admonished them for letting someone share testimony in a language that not everyone understood. So they needed to have an interpreter when sharing testimony.

But in that same passage Paul made clear what the nature of the Holy Ghost spiritual gift of tongues was for:

1Co 14:22 Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.

Well, you might want to search out Baptist roots! You will be surprised that Baptist were the most charismatic before, during and after the dark ages!

Don't know how this thread got off on tongues...but a stronghold of unbelief..maybe!

"In the Law it is written: "Through men of strange tongues and through the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me," says the Lord. Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all, and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, "God is really among you!"" (1 Corinthians 14:21-25)

Paul seems to contradict himself in this passage. First he says that tongues are a "sign" for unbelievers, but then he says that if unbelievers see people speaking in tongues, the unbelievers will think that the believers are out of their minds.

It turns out that "uninterpreted tongues" have been used in Israel's history as a sign to the unbelieving Israelites that God's judgment had come upon them. Paul was quoting a prophecy from Isaiah 28:11-12:

"Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues God will speak to this people, to whom he said, "This is the resting place, let the weary rest"; and, "This is the place of repose"-- but they would not listen." (Isaiah 28:11-12)

This prophecy was fulfilled when the Assyrian army swooped down upon Israel speaking a foreign language (an uninterpreted tongue), carrying Israel off into captivity. Paul used an example from Israel's history to show that uninterpreted tongues are sometimes used as a "sign" for unbelievers that judgment has come upon them.

Then Paul pointed out that if an unbeliever enters a church where Christians seem to have lost their minds, the unbeliever wouldn't see this as a sign of impending judgment. This is why Paul said that prophecy is much more beneficial during a church service.

Sorry to inflict that upon you brother! It is hard to imagine how people do not see right through this, but God sometimes gives people over to their delusions ...so they can believe the lie.

I guess no double annointing for you today...you know the double portion!

So you think that when a person ask God to show them truth, that he would give them delusion?

My Bible tells me..."Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:11-13)

The key to understanding this passage is that Jesus gives examples of a son asking his father for a gift, and then He says that "your Father" will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask. In other words, if you are a Christian, a child of God, then you can ask your Father for the Holy Spirit. First you must be saved (at which point God becomes your heavenly Father - see John 1:12-13, Galatians 3:26, and 4:4-7), then you can ask for the Holy Spirit. But remember, when we become saved we automatically receive the indwelling Holy Spirit, we don't have to ask for Him! Yet Jesus says that God will give the gift of the Holy Spirit to those who ask for it. This gift, therefore, is not salvation (because we do not become saved by asking God for the Holy Spirit), but instead this gift is what the Bible calls the "baptism" of the Holy Spirit for receiving spiritual empowerment.

    Something to ponder....

You are missing passage after passage, and you are clueless about Spirit baptism, paul was not healed of a sickness as you contend, God blinded Him and God restored his sight.

we have all heard these false ideas you are offering.
    This is a complete falsehood.

    Lets not forget the 72....

In Luke 9:1-10, Jesus sent the apostles out on a short-term missions trip to preach the Gospel, heal the sick, and cast out demons. Then in Luke 10:1-17 Jesus sent out dozens of ordinary believers to do the same:

Luke 10:1,9,17: "After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. ... [He said,] "Heal the sick who are there and tell them, 'The kingdom of God is near you.'" ... The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.""

The apostle Paul made it clear that as he carried out the Great Commission, he didn't do it merely with persuasive words but instead he demonstrated the power of God in order to convince people:

1 Corinthians 2:4-5: "My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power."

    Paul was speaking of the power of the new birth, not power for all believers to do apostolic sign gifts.The power was the ability to repent and serve God by the Spirit.;
Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.

5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.

6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost.

7 So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.

8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.

    9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;

10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
