    Too many liberals.

It a proven fact that liberals are generally unhappy about almost everything including the freedoms we still enjoy.

There was another poll where an island in the Pacific called Vanatu (sp?) came top - they can't both be right!

You should be happy that the USA got to 16th, I bet Britain was lower!

It was, perhaps because our elections are not so glitzy. "Britain" as they called us, came 21st. But I do wonder how reliable the poll is. It claims to use data from 1995 to 2007, yet East and West Germany are treated as separate countries, in spite of the fact that they were united in 1990.

Seriously, though, the people in the world who should be the most truly and lasting happy are not the residents of one country or another, but those who know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour.

Wrong again! Look at the liberal societies on the list ranking as happier than the USA. Denmark is one of the world's most liberal societies.
Just like Sweden, Denmark is a Nordic welfare state with most of its services free to the citizens. Expect to pay 72% of your money to the government on the highest income tax bracket. According to Wikipedia Denmark has the worlds highest taxes!

When buying a car in Denmark one has to pay 25% VAT to the import price of the vehicle and then a 180% registration tax on top. That means when a car sells for $20 000, you have to pay an additional $45 000 as taxes for the government (total of $65 000). That’s why people in Denmark ride bikes or use one of the best public transport systems in the world.

Major political parties: Liberals; Social Democrats; Danish People's Party; Conservatives; Social Liberals; Socialist People's Party; Centre Democrats; Unity List; Christian Democratic Party.

And just how is happiness quantified, exactly? Only 97 countries were sampled, using I believe 300,000 or so. This is about as useful as knowing that the first miniature golf course was in Chattanooga, TN.

    I'm sorry.

I didn't realize that Swedes and Danes were now considered American liberals.

    It's a proven fact.

American liberals are generally an unhappy bunch. Your spirited, misguided and misdirected defense will not change the facts. Your post indicates that you may even be unhappy about being an unhappy liberal.

You did not specify American liberals in your original post. As for me, I am a very happy person. How about you?

Then carpro, you are saying you are not equating liberalism with unhappiness? Your post didn't seem to be saying that. It appears you are telling me that a high percentage of liberals in a country results in a greater degree of unhappiness in the general population. Is that not what you are saying? If not, do you then subscribe to European liberalism, such as that found in Denmark, as a better system? How would you say Euro liberalism differs from American liberalism? Don't want to put words in your mouth...just trying to figure out your point.

    Yes you do.

That's one of your favorite tactics.

My point is obvious. What you are doing is trying to obfuscate it.

    Unsuccessfully, I might add.

It is a proven fact that liberals in the same America that was referred to by CTB when he asked "Why is the US 16th? " are generally a very unhappy dissatisfied bunch.

Care to get back on topic? The happiness of Danes and Swedes is not relevant to his question. Only to your attempt at obfuscation.

I see there is no rational discussion to be had with you. Oh well, I tried.

I am not surprised that people in several other countries are happier overall more than Americans. The citizens of a lot of other countries are not as materialistic on average as Americans are. They don't have to have the latest "toy" or the latest car or the latest fashionable item, etc.

    "Happiness" is relative.

Comparing the happiness of people in different societies is a useless endeavor and proves absolutely nothing.

Even Droopy says he's happy, ( "Know what folks? I'm happy" ) but you would never know it just looking at him!:1_grouphug:
