Have you ever had to destroy a hard drive- ie when you purchase a new computer?

    What is your prefered method?

    Bang it with a hammer
Drive over it in your Yugo
    Wave a magnet over it
    Drill a hole thru it

I always stick a screw driver under the circuit board and pry up till it breaks and take the cover off so I can get to the disks and do the same HOWEVER some are glass so before you pry stick the whole thing in a bag and turn your eyes away :) If it is metal then just pry till they are bent good. And, you may not be able to tell which the disks are till you have applied force.

An easier way is to run a destruction program on them, many free ones around.

Agree with the last. Find a program that'll "wipe" the hard drive"; preferably with at least 3 passes. Then destroy it.

A 16 lb. sledge seems to do the trick well enough.
