You may be right. I hope not, but I have to admit it is possible. I always knew I was a bit different. It is a mistake to assume that many people are like us when they may not be.

But even if we don't number half, we are not extict yet.

Eighty five years after the first constitution of the U.S. was enacted a Confederate constitution was enacted for those who withdrew from the Union.

A lot of blood was let--some brother against brother. The Union prevailed. Many are still fighting--underground.

Curiously, one of the issues which started the war was uncontrolled bureaucracy in Washington.

Not much has changed since the 1860's.

There are many of us who have taken an oath to defend the U.S. Constitution as amended to the death if needed. Many have given the supreme sacrifice.

    Even so, come Lord Jesus.

The main issue which caused the Civil War was that the South decided to unilaterally secede because they did not like the election results and thought Lincoln was going to abolish slavery. They claimed "state's rights" yet were perfectly willing to use federal government powers to catch fugitive slaves for example.

    1. Economic and social differences between the North and the South. The South was agrarian and the North was industrial. As the North became more industrial the markets of Europe no longer sold their goods in the US due to huge taxes passed by the Northern majority in Congress. This resulted in the South having to buy Northern goods at inflated prices and having to sell their cotton to the North as a fraction of what it was worth on the world market.

    2. States versus federal rights. The rights of the States, as guaranteed by the Constitution, were eroded by Washington. Southerners felt that the Federal government was passing laws, such as import taxes, that treated them unfairly (which was true). They believed that individual states had the right to "nullify", or overturn, any law the Federal government passed (also true). They also believed that individual states had the right to leave the United States and form their own independent country (the Constitution does not mention secession so opinions vary). Most people in the North believed that the concepts of "nullification" and "states' rights" would make the United States a weaker country and were against these ideas (incorrect, but a common error, even today).

    3. Election of Lincoln when he wasn't even on the ballot of 10 states. However, you must bear in mind that even before Lincoln was elected South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas had already seceded.

I totally agree. In fact, 90% on this board have no idea what it means to serve, sacrifice, or risk their lives for freedom and liberty, never mind the Constitution. In most cases, it is quite obvious those with the loudest and longest posts have the least idea what they are talking about. Most people's idea of patriotism and defending anything is going to a 4th of July parade and singing "God Bless America."

There is a big difference between believing in the Constitution and our founding principles with ones total being, and using the subject as a hobby as an intellectual exercise with the copy and paste tool.
