    IFBReformer,

God states that men should be differnt than women. Now if you want to take it there, where in the bible does it say men should wear suites and ties? Why not have the preacher wear Leather Pants, a harley davidson tee and a leather vest!

Women are to look like women. I wear pants around the house, and once in a while when it is VERY cold out I will throw on a pair of jeans, but God has convicted my heart about this subject so I obey and look like a woman.

There are ladies that wear pants to church, nothing is said about them and we wouldn't throw them out. But God does clearly make the distiction that men and women are to look different.

We are to serarate ourselves from the secular world. Yes we still have to live in it, and we still have to deal with secular people, but we are to be viewed as different. Not looking like the secular world.

Movie theaters in and of themselves are not wrong. Here is what is wrong about them. ( At least this is what I got out of the conviction)

Your testemony is like your identity (finger print) in Christ. It is what separates us to make us differnt, among other things. We as Christians are ALWAYS being watched by others because we are so different. People view us as weird, holy rollers, bible thumpers etc....
They will look for any excuse to point a finger at us to show US we are not Holy. ( I have experienced this first hand)
If we are to go to a movie theater (Most have more than one movie playing at a time)
and lets say it was playing Bambi in one, Amityville Horror in the next, and one that is just shy of XX. You of course went to see Bambi, but as you walk out of the movie or into the movie a few people see you, now they can assume you went to see Bambi but most likely they will not.

Same as if you went into a liquor store because you were walking and was thirsty so you went in to buy a bottle of water. They non christian that watches you sees you, in a liquor store, are they going to think "Oh, they must be in there buying water."? I don't think so.

We must guard our testemonies. So no, going to the movies per say is not wrong, it's the message we are showing the lost.

Hair. What is considered long you asked me. We should look different them men. It does not give an actual length. But men's hair should be short and should not resemble a woman's hair.

Some believe that your hair should be flowingly long, to your buttocks. I don't believe that is true. If a woman wants her hair that way fine. But God does not say to. All He says it we should look like women.

I also thank God the IFB church is "Radical". I also thank God we are plain and simple. I thank God we are Independent. And I thank God we stick to the Fundamental truths.
I thank God we hold our standards to the Bible, and I thank God for my pastor who does not apologize for his sermons. He preaches what the Holy Spirit tells him to and is not afraid to hurt someones feelings.

    AMEN!

You're correct smoking is harmful, so is candy, cookies, going outside in the city(breathing polluted air), fried foods, etc...are these all forbidden biblically also? and no I don't smoke
Go into the 'G' rated movie...do you shop at Wal Mart, Target, K Mart, or any other department store that sells movies? What if they sell movies that have nudity or glorify the act of promiscuous sex? How do you abstain from all appearances of evil?
You are exactly right in the above comments. We don't have to stumble to find the answers. Jesus himself dined with sinners...tax collectors even. People talked but Christ did not partake in the sin...was Christ wrong because He did not do what the crouds thought he ought?
Sorry to perpetuate an OT post...just had to answer this.

Welllll, I think I'll stop by the gas station, pick me up a pack of cigarettes, go to the movies (the G rated one that is showing the same place the X rated one is showing), and then go to a bar (where everyone else is drinking booze) and have a Coke, while puffing on my smokes.

So what if someone sees me (and I become a stumbling block). Who cares? We do what we want and the heck with what anyone thinks.

Then I will try to witness to someone. Think they'll listen and want what I have when they already have that kind of lifestyle? I think not.

Is that your idea of living a Godly life YABBA?

Just take care of us, do what we want to do and let the rest of the world go to Hell (possibly with our help)?

    Unbelievably sad... :(

    YABBA,

I think there is a slight degree of consensus.

We do have the privelege, calling, command, and opportunity to live Christ filled lives so that those around us will see a difference.

Or, we can choose to live the worldly life

WOW...I posted a legit response and then sarcasm beyond belief. I hesitate to even respond due to the obvious responses to come but oh well here goes.
    first to 16 and BM,
your sarcasm shows me a lot about your beliefs. While we as Christians are not to be of the world and do not answer to worldly goals and ideals we do have to live in the world. I don't know about you but I have to work in order to support my family. This means that day to day I have to buy gas at a place that sells smokes, breath air that is harmful to my body, be around people who do not speak, think or act like me. Guess what some people might get a wrong impression from time to time. Am I wrong for their assumptions? I attend seminary and my school is in a section of town where drug dealings occur regularly, actually a lot of times on the corner of the block. If people see an upper middle class white man pull into a gas station in this neighborhood after work, often only one thing is thought...he's buying drugs. Am I wrong for that?
The sarcastic situation mentioned in your response is ludicrous because you are intentionally misconstrueing my statements to make them look intentionally bad. Personal convictions should deffinitely be held to. If you have a personal conviction to never go to a movie theatre...great please don't go...but it is not a Biblical mandate. If you have a personal conviction to not drink at all...please don't...but it is not a Biblical mandate(notice I did not say drunkeness). Smoking I do think is wrong and coverd under keeping the temple holy, but even that can be debated. Are there Biblical mandates for life? Absolutely and there does not need to be any added to it. I believe the Word of God to be perfect and infallible...why should I add more than is already there?
As to my idea of a Godly life, I believe that there is one example above all else of a Godly life...God Himself, Jesus Christ the Savior of us all. Christ walked on this earth and showed us the greatest example ever of being heavenly minded while still doing earhly good. Christ set an example of while still being different from the world in spirit He still invested his life in others...often those others were viewed as sinners and often people said He was evil by association. By no means am I saying I am perfect like Christ, or that I am half the Man Christ was and is...but as a Christian I MUST strive to live in His example, and that is deffinitely not being so "spiritually minded" as to do no "earthly good".

El_Guero, I certainly do not choose to lead a wordly life, but I know that my current place of being is on Earth...I'm not in heaven yet..but ONE DAY!!!!

    God Bless to ALL!!!

Folks, give Yabba a break. In the netherworld of the internet, you cannot completely communicate as you intend, so we shouldn't come unglued so easily.

I'm sure he was not advocating that we should all act as to appear worldly and wicked - so as to ruin our testimony. Sometimes our typing fingers move to fast. [IMG]

He does make some correct statements though about other wordly habits Christians ignore while condemning others. For instance:

    </font>
    • the well-intentioned godly lady with far to much makeup and boufed up hair</font>
    • the (not so) occasional baptist that eats like a hog</font>
    • the normal baptist, who to the detriment of local business prefers Wal-Mart (and others) who stock unwholesome and ungodly inventory, as well as Bibles and "the Passion of the Christ" on DVD</font>
    • Speaking of that, how many Christian shops are suffering, now that people prefer to buy even religious books, tapes, CDs, etc. from Wal-Mart rather than a Christian business?</font>
    • buying gas from a place that also sells liquor, smokes, lotto tickets, and chewtabacky</font>
If we condemn some ungodly things, shouldn't we justly condemn all ungodly associations?

Okay now, don't flame me for this post, please! I'm just trying to be objective here!

    Yabba,

I do think it is you who has stretched it a bit. You go on to say about alcohol and smoking, then go on to say you go to school in an area of town that is known for drug deals. This is totally differnt.
Your going to school, you are not choosing to go into these areas. Some things CAN NOT be advoided this we all understand. But it is a choice to walk into a liquor store, or into a movie theater that also shows r to x rated movies. That is a Choice.
There are times that we have all had to go somewhere in town or out, that wasn't the best area at all, known for prostitution and drugs. Does it mean we were there to buy drugs or a prostitute? No... will some people think that......? Probably so. The non believer as I stated earlier is like a hawk awaiting its prey. They wait for us to do wrong or even look as if we are doing wrong, I guess to try to make themselves feel better. Just to say, look what I caught the bible thumper doing, or look where I saw the holy roller today.

So you kinda stretched it too far. You are comparing grapes to steak.

There are things that can not be avoided and then there are things than can be avoided with a choice.

No, I haven't read all four pages nor do I intend to do so. But, I can write about my sector of the Baptist Galaxy.

My lineage is through the Northern Baptists. We broke with the Southern Baptists back in the 1830s or so. (Remember the Triennial Convention?) Francis Wayland laid out the basic philosophical diffence between the to parties in his book Principles and Practices of Baptists.

The Southerners wanted a star type of organization. Funds from the various churches and individuals for various activities go into a central collecting body and are then disburesed to the relevent activities.

The Northerners wanted a decentralized system. They wanted matters organized on a functional basis (e.g. The Northern Baptist Bible and Publication Society, The NB Foriegn and Home Mission Society, The NB .... Society). Each NB organization was (at least until the NBC was formed) organicly independent of the other. Though each shared the same constituency for funds and man power. Messy yes but they muddled their way through.

The differences between SBC'ers and IFB'ers varies quite a bit by where you are looking (Texas versus Ohio) and which groups within the SBC or IFB. Even things we wouldn't consider to have an impact will have an impact (Is it the First Church of smallville or is it a "community" church). And there is often a difference amongst IFB'ers based upon which group they came from (Northern versus Southern Baptists).

Note: I am using IFB which may not be what you intended ... if you intend, are SBC'ers fundamental, I would say almost always.

There is no theater I have ever heard of that shows G rated films with X rated films.

Having said that even relating R rated firms to G related films the same could be said of you entering a video store, or entering the video section of your grocery store.

How do people know what you will rent or buy?

The theater is not the evil place - only certain movies that are show there are.

The Bible tells us to stay away from all kinds of evil, but it does not tell us not to go to stores, malls or theaters because they all have things Christians should not engage in - we are simply not to engage in that which is intrinsically evil.

If we start playing the guilt by association game, then it never ends, and you will never be consistant except to lock yourself in your house and never go out.

It is painfully clear that something has gone awfully wrong with the perception of Christianity in the USA.
Maintaining the illusion of some sort of perfect 'righteousness' to the point of silliness, has trumped genuine meaningfull ethical standards.

mioque: I certainly am not righteousness. "There is none righteous; no not one."

As for myself, I do not want to smoke, go to bars or questionable movies. Those are not my 'rules'. They are my convictions. I'm not saying everyone else has to have them, but they work for me.

IFBReformer: We have one theater in my town and it shows four movies at the same time. They are all rated differently. I don't even like to look at the posters for the "R" rated movies in the lobby.

If there is a movie I want to see, I wait until it comes out on VHS or DVD. Yes, I go to the video store to rent them, but you'll never see me coming out of 'the back room' where the porn is...

If we don't stand for something - we will fall for anything.

Well, I'll have to concur with Yabba.

Do you avoid eating at places like Olive Garden, OCharley's Chili's, etc? They sell wine, and they serve sweet tea in goblets. *Could* look like wine. Where should the line be drawn? Well, apparently, its different for different folks. I'd never buy alcohol at WalMart (or anywhere for that matter), but I do go down the aisle to get bottled water. What if someone doesnt see what I actually got down that aisle?

As for the theater: when I have seen folks at the movies, I dont assume they have just seen or are going to see an R movie. But if they do, thats between them and God. None of my business.

To me, its more about what's going into the mind than what people might incorrectly assume. That's why I dont watch Oprah, Jerry Springer, soap operas, etc. And no one even knows IF I watch those things or not.

BibleMaMa: I understand the conviction for wearing dresses only. But what I dont understand is why pants can be worn at home? A woman should like like a woman, if thats the arguement, but even when no one is home or its cold outside, God sees. I am not slammin' ya, just crossed my mind.

That's why it's bad that many feel the need to aim for some arbitrary the outward illusion of it. Or worse feel the need for OTHERS to maintain such an illusion.

You obviously didn't read my post.

I am not trying to pretend anything. Everyone has their own preferences and convictions.

I was merely stating mine. I don't believe I have ever condemned anyone for not believing the way I do...

I can get along with everyone. I don't care what they wear or how long/short their hair is. It is not my job to judge them. It is my job to love them.
