    I have started to reply to this point three or four times but could not find the right words.

    I think that Iconoclast, with this sentence expresses what I would like to say:
    I could be wrong, but I think that Our Lord does not necessarily change our personality once we come to Him.

    Again Nodak.....Another thing that happens with some believers in general and can be common to any real Christian... They keep studying with a view to obey God. they listen to many sermons, and begin to read more solid writings dealing with sanctification.

    We are saved by grace 100% of God....we are also kept and sanctified by the power of God 100%. That being said....once justified sanctification is an active process that we fully engage in.

    People who are saved grow and mature at different rates.

    A person sees the verses that speak of this;
    14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

    15 Looking diligently
    lest any man fail of the grace of God;

    in taking this command seriously Christians try and obey it in different ways.

    Some mistakenly add to the command like OT Israel did and become legalistic in the flesh.

    Others read the puritans who were clearly the best on this topic, however they walked a fine line between proper gospel obedience and also moving into a form of legalism.

    This is a main issue for serious minded bible students. Relaxing enough and prayerfully relying on the Spirit of God working in and through the word of God in us teaching and guiding us, and yet giving full effort to be diligent to OBEY the commands and lawful commandments that we are given in the word.

    We obey and work diligently, because the Spirit works in us to will and to do of His good pleasure.

    The confusion on this point is where some do not understand the implications of Lordship in the life of a believer.

    Nodak...here is an example...download Richard Baxters Christian Directory.

    I bought this book....I was convicted just by reading the table of contents:thumbs:

    he lists several considerations of how a Christian is to conduct himself living under the kingdom rule of the Lord Jesus Christ. he goes into meticulous detail.
    Some might consider what he says as extreme and perhaps leaning to the legalistic side and maybe in some things he is.

    I chose to look at each idea and weigh it out scripturally...in other words...could I find scriptural support for it? I challenge myself because I would tend to slack off and go easy on myself ,and look for loopholes:(

    When a person attempts to be serious and soberminded...they can forget to also cultivate the love and joy that is also to accompany the obedience

    Nodak...this in my view is the key verse that must balance out Hebrews12

    romans 14...speaking of our kingdom responsibilities;
    16 Let not then your good be evil spoken of:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
    18 For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.

    The bottom line in this is as Pauline theology accords, that under the new Covenant, we are people of the Holy Spirit, and HE alone can give us the means to live as we ought!

    Working through this kind of material and looking up each verse offered is quite a study in and of itself....implementing these duties is a matter of much prayer and trial and error.

    How much does he discuss the Person and work of the Holy Spirit in us enabling us to do those disciplines though?

    What means are you talking about? I do not think a one sentence response gives any indication of the teaching

    I gave a link in the other post...there are 70 different topics with teaching included. You need to click on it...scroll down and read through a couple of sections ,looking up the verses and meditating upon it.

    To give one word answers ...a person remains shallow and never develops proper study habits...they will then repeat the same error they started with.

    The Holy Spirit....does not do it for us. You cannot just dismiss this whole topic with a one liner. You can offer a one line summary, if you want to demonstrate the point to Nodak of how some have a different outlook then others

    I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. Galatians 2:20

    Maybe not a theologically complete one sentence response...but if you expound it is fairly comprehensive.

    Again....the link provides 998 pages of study material to work through...that is what will answer your question....not a second hand book report from me.

    I think you have error in this area of sanctification and the Christian ,and the relationship of NT believers to God's law. I would urge you to read on it.

    Yes Jon C......except the puritans take this verse as a starting point , then put it under a biblical microscope and attempt to tie in any and every verse that relates to it.
    Even if someone says they were long winded [and there are times they are] I have found it worthwhile to sift through the verses offered with the explanation and to me....Gal 2;20 is a foundational verse ...but expanding it is building the house upon it.
