My brother who is 12 years older than myself and my mother were talking about that back in the 80's. Each of us looked at it from what we had seen in our life. The Christians and the nonchristians showed a lot more respect for each other. My mother said it came right before WW2, my brother said it started right after WW2 and I said it started with the fight over prayer in the schools in the 50's. We each had a picture of when it started in our life, but what speeded it up was who was doing the teaching in grade school through collage. Each group has to have it their way and we all divide up into groups and then more groups and so on. Untill the fight started over prayer in the 50's and long after that, the Christians for the most part didn't stand up for that and many other things, right or wrong, but the other side were very active. Just thinking.

 

Prayers do not have to always be formal, nor verbal.

May the principal pray when intercom announcements are being made?

May a student pray as he/she is accepting election as class officer?

Okay. Now I understand. Here are my answers:

May a teacher pray when the tardy bell rings? Yes.

May the principal pray when intercom announcements are being made? Yes.

May a student pray as he/she is accepting election as class officer? Yes.

May any student pray when called on in a class discussion? Yes.

 

With your Yes answers, they would of necessity not be 'formal' or 'verbal,' unless a teacher would be heard praying as the bell sounded, the principal would be heard praying over the intercom, and the students be heard at the given moments. But they can be praying nonformally, nonverbally, I gather, at such times. So what if they are trying that, with 2 different trains of thought at once, and they 'let slip' a praise or an "amen" in confusion? Is that legal or illegal?

 

A verbal "slip" while praying shouldn't be judged by legality or illegality, in my opinion. But I grew up in a different era in these United States when people didn't sue at the drop of a hat. When I was a kid people simply overlooked "slips" in just about any area that didn't involve personal injury and went on about their business.

 

This is the post I was referring to. Stunned and shocked are synonyms the last time I knew.
