    Hi, Holly.

Mainstream Baptists do not believe you have to be baptized in order to go to heaven. That would be salvation through works and the Bible clearly says, "For by grace are ye saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is a gift of God, lest any man should boast."

But baptism (by immersion) is an ordinance, such as is the Lord's Supper (Communion), which we observe in obedience to our Lord and Saviour.

We baptize by immersion to show (symbolically) the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Baptism by immersion is a Baptist distinctive, as I'm sure you have read in some of the other threads.

Hope that helps. If anybody has anything to add to my comments, please feel free. [IMG]

    Hi Holly,
My husband and I were talking about baptism last night. He has spoken in a number of different churches (he is not a pastor but a lay person) and he told me that he is very aware of some Baptist preachers and congregants in Australia, where he is from, who definitely believe that if you are not baptized by immersion you will not go to heaven. So that wrong belief is still in some places and still being taught. It sure takes the focus off of Jesus, doesn't it?

I believe baptism shows obedience to Christ. It's an outward, public showing of one's profession of faith in Him.

One gets to heaven by the grace of God that gives you repentance and faith to believe. And, bless God, he that believeth is NOT condemned!

If that grace comes by any work, ritual, rite or action on the part of man, well, then it is no more grace!

I have heard preachers who emphasized baptism and being a baptist so much that sadly, many listeners throught you had to be one to get to heaven.

    Greetings Holly.

There are several denominations that believe that
one has to be baptized to go to heaven.

I call this the baptismal regenerational heresy
    and heresy it is.

The so-called churches of Christ hold to this view
as do seventh day adventist and Roman Catholics ect...I believe there will be many baptized that
misplaced their faith and it carried them to hell.

It is Christ finished work at the cross period. Some believe that the baptismal waters brings a person into contact with the saving
blood that Christ shed at Calvary. No where in
the Bible is such an idea taught.

It is the message of the cross where Christ atoned
for mankinds sin not baptism although I believe it
to be important in our public idenity with the death the burial and the resurrection of Christ.

{1st.Cor 1:18}For the preaching of the cross is to
them that perish foolishness;but unto us which are
saved it is the power of God.

My blessings to you in Christ.
A fundamental baptist saved by grace.
    Brother Miller.

Definately not!!!! Baptism is important, an act of obediance, but it does get you ito heaven. Belief in Jesus Christ as Saviour is the only requirement, and even that is by the grace of God [IMG]

Baptism is not necessary in order to get to heaven. However, a person who refuses to get babptized after their salvation does not engender any confidence in me as to their salvation.

    No.

Baptism is a public profession of faith. Identifying with the death, buriel and resurection of Christ. Baptism does not make a person saved.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question. I was raised since birth in a Baptist church. I never believed that you HAVE to be baptized to get to heaven--I've just heard that some people DO believe this.

    Thanks again!!

I was saved and was baptisted later because that's how it was done in the bible. Baptism wasn't gonna do it. Only Christ could do that.

</font>[/QUOTE]LOL! Descriptive term. As you can see, Baptists are all over the place on every issue on this Board! Before the BB, I thought we all believed the same things. Boy did I get enlightened! [IMG]
