Do you monitor your kid's cartoons?

My son and I like to watch Discovery Channel, History Channel, Hallmark Channel, etc. So I wasn't very "up" on kids cartoons.

Then someone mentioned to me that they had discovered that there is a whole "porn" industry built up around the children's cartoon series "animaniacs". As in, they've taken the characters and draw them in pornographic manners and methods. One young man I work with heard the conversation and said, "Yeah, my first experience with porn was that stuff. Its like a cartoon version of Hustler." They were warning parents to monitor their kids if they were into that.

Someone said, "Have you seen what they show on Saturday mornings?" So, I decided to find out.

I would say a good 90% of Saturday Morning cartoons are based on ancient Chinese religious beliefs. Dragons of good and evil, batteling it out for control of people. Magic that causes dead relatives of the heros to empower the heros. Its not pretty at all.

    I was just stunned.

Yes we do. And it all meets our standards which are pretty high. If it doesn't meet our standards, we turn it.

    Joseph,

What do you do about when they visit elsewhere?

That's the time that has me concerned.

    Well,

My son is only 2, so he doesn't do a lot of visiting. When we do visit grand parents, aunts and uncles, we also monitor what they watch there. Then again, they also have the same high standards we do. When he gets older, I don't know what I will do. This is probably a case where you need to get to know the visiting kid's parents and know that you can trust their judgment.

Does anyone have a list of the cartoons that children should NOT watch?

If necessary, I will sit and watch cartoons, but it would be better if I could know in advance and let my grandchildren know the ones that are all right to watch.

Our girls watch a lot of Dora, Blue's Clues and Veggie Tales. Plus they love to watch the old Looney Toon, Tom & Jerry, and Popeye cartoons.

Our oldest child is 40 and we monitored what they watched way back in the old days, just after color tv was becoming popular :)

    I like Dora. ;)
    I love Veggie Tales.
The original Looney Toons are good.
Some of the original Hannah Barbara are good.
Thomas the Tank Engine was good when my son was little, but George Carlin does the voice, so that's kind of an iffy.

Sponge Bob Square Pants doesn't seem to hold anything unChristian that I've seen, despite what Dr. Dobson said. I don't think of Bob and Patrick as gay, just ... very, very, very dumb.

Avoid anything now days that is "adventure". It all seems to be from Japan and it all seems to teach Zen theories.

Our son is very young as well so we don't have to worry about visiting right now either. But some good advice that I heard from a parent of an older child is to make your home available and comfortable so that kids will want to come to your house. That way you never have to worry about your kid going somewhere else [IMG] Pretty good advice. I don't know how feasible it is, but always worth a try I guess.

My kids watched/watch all the ones listed above as well as Animaniacs, Looney Tunes, Magic School Bus, SpongeBob, Invader Zim, Jimmy Neutron, Fairly Odd Parents, Kids Next Door, and others that I can not think of at this time.

I have been watching Animaniacs since it first came out, and have NO IDEA what you mean about it being porn.

My wife was watching Jimmy Neutron the other day, and said she heard some crude language in it and turned it. I am not exactly sure what they said, I will have to ask her when she gets home.

You should hear the potty mouths of my 4 year old boys in S/S. Body functions crack them up.

    Dina,

Apparently some kind of "cult" following has grown up around the animaniacs. I don't know if it is "official" or sanctioned in anyway or what. I do know that it has "roll playing" games associated with it.

I'm not posting links here, but "anime shrine" is what I was told to look up. The pictures were enough to send me away.

ok, I looked that up as well as doing on search on that with Animaniacs. All I got was Japanese anime, and the term for the fans of that anime is Animaniacs. So... my question, are we talking about the same Animaniacs?

This is who I am talking about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animaniacs

    Dina,

I'm not sure if we are or not.

I was told that "anime shrine" is part of animaniacs. I don't know animaniacs, so I don't know. I assumed the person who told me knew.

'The World' has taken MANY innocent characters and turned them into porn. Pinnochio, Popeye and Olive Oyl, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Felix the Cat, etc. A Google Search without strict filtering brings up horrid stuff.

My Nick is 10 1/2 and will turn a show if someone says 'oh my god'.

For older kids, Cyberchase, Codename: Kids Next Door, Liberty's Kids, The Proud Family and more. Jimmy Neutron has some words such as Geek, Nerd but I don't know what 'bad word' wifey might have heard.

I LOVE Courage the Cowardly Dog. Stone me if you must, but it cracks me up that the old couple is so oblivious to the timid dog saving them from aliens, monsters, etc. [IMG]

In some houses, I guess butt is a bad word. In my house my 12 year old autistic child says "oooooh bad word, they cuss" when someone on a show says "shut-up".

I really don't have a problem with Geek, Nerd, and some of the other "names" that get called on cartoons. I also crack up watching Courage. The old people get me giggling.

TexasSky, I REALLY think we are not talking about the same thing. Wacko, Yacko and Dot-the Warner brothers and sister-are pretty tame. Perhaps the person telling you was talking about some of the Japanese Anime cartoons that are on TV, and if that is what she meant then yes, I agree and my children do not watch those types of cartoons.
