In midevil days it was unheard of to live to fifty. So they married the kids off pretty young.
But that's not pertinent for today. I could just imagine what would happen if I told my parents today I wanted to get married soon......after an hour of yelling, everyone would be invited to my funeral! [IMG] Just kidding about that!
But I'll say this. I'm 15. I have NO desire to be married right now! For one thing there is sooooooo much I still don't know. In maturity I might be ready, but in other ways I'm not.
However I know a lady in my church {and at first I didn't beleive her!} who recently told me that she was almost 15 when she got married. She's not THAT old! Early sixties at the most.
I also know a pastor who met his wife when she was 13, and married her when she was 16....amd he was in his early twenties!
For me personaly, I think I'll wait untill I'm out of school and all that before I marry!

You pastor is Jerry Lee Lewis?

    Just kidding!!!

I must admit it sounds quite unusual. When you're 13, you're still a kid. I have a 15yo who is quite independent, but she knows very well that she's not ready for the world. We shouldn't be in a hurry to grow up too fast, marriage included. When someone bucks the system, and marries at such a young age, all I can say is, best of luck to them. But that doesn't automatically mean it's the best thing. For every 16yo bride/groom, there are 10 18yo divorcees. The statistics favoring marital failure are extremely high. When someone says "I got married at 16, and we've been married for 40 years", it's no more pertinent than me saying "I went to Vegas with $100, and won $1000".

It is historically proven that ancient cultures married very young. But then their life expectancy wasn't very long back then.

Hey what do I know? I think marriage is only just slightly less of a challenge than being a parent. I just don't understand what would make someone want to jump into it at a time in their life when their priorities should be on growing up.

Honestly...when I read the thread title...I thought it was going to be a thread on when a person would be too old to get married. Wording....age limit, not minimum age requirement.

My oldest living child is 11. I can't imagine him being ready for marriage for at least another decade...maybe even two. Just because a person has the phyical capability to have children...shouldn't be a reason to jump into marriage and parenting.

GROAN! You'd better be! ;) Besides, it isn't MY pastor! LOL he and his wife are friends of mine. And everytime he talks about his wife he talks about how much he loves her. They do joke about it though. He said "well first I married her and then I finished raising her!"
Your right, I'm sure a lot of teen marriages don't make it. Just because it worked for some dosn't mean It works for all. :D

It is obvious, that a lot of "so called" Christians don't have ant idea of God's way of betroval or courtship, or the parents involvement in the process.

These processees that you speak of are primarily cultural in origin and differ across those lines. I believe that to sum up the arguement on age limits that it is one of those areas where we are to "render to Ceaser". Many different factors within a society influence when a person gets married and to whom. These include economic factors as well as mortality rates etc.... Before the advent of modern medical practices which have prolonged the lives of many people who would have been selected out of the genetic pool, people generally married young so as to increase the chances that they would produce offspring before death which was a very real threat in those days. People could and did die from minor infections that are treated relatively simply nowadays.

I know. I was in an oxygen tent in first grade, and had pneumonia probably at least twice as an adult. I was vaccinated against a bunch of diseases. I was induced also because my diabetic mother couldn't carry me live to term. I was treated for an acute arrhythmia. I had my gall bladder out. Back surgery took me off the permanenetly disabled list. And preventive surgery kept me from getting cancer 25-30 years from now. Blood pressure and cholesterol medications are prolonging my life, possibly by decades, and a proton-inhibiting drug may prevent esophageal cancer and healed my ulcers.

Without modern medicine, I'd have died a long time ago! And it could keep me alive decades longer than my parents. Don't even get me started on the benefits of modern dentistry!

Oh, please keep in mind, that I'm not even out of school and into my career yet, by the way.

As for the age limit-there are a lot of variables involved.

As for God's involvement-He has set a lot of variables.

As for parents involvement-we have a lot of responsiblity and variables to apply.
