    If we understand it in the context of contemporary English usage, I agree. However, in the context of Early Modern English they may well have seen the word in a different light.

    The same may well be true of the opposite, expiration. In Early Modern English it meant "to breathe out." But today it means "no longer in force" or even "dead."

    The words stay the same but the use changes over time. Which is what makes philology such an interesting study. :)
