ACLU Launches Crusade Against Christmas Displays
    Friday, December 19, 2003

    By Sam Kastensmidt

For years, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has sustained a vicious assault upon Christianity and all public expressions of faith. As we approach the Christmas holiday, the ACLU is pulling out all the stops to ensure that the public ignores the true meaning behind the federal holiday of Christmas.

    Oldham County, Kentucky

In Kentucky, the ACLU has questioned the constitutionality of a nativity scene that is displayed in front of the Oldham County Courthouse. After receiving a formal complaint from the ACLU, dated December 9, Oldham County officials met to discuss the most appropriate action for the county to take. Judge-Executive Mary Ellen Kinser, to whom the complaint was addressed, then asked David Friedman, general counsel of the ACLU, if he would like to erect his own display on the courthouse lawn.

The ACLU of Kentucky has not yet issued a formal response, but Friedman told reporters that if the county were to fail to allow all other displays, “they would have a free-speech problem.”

Dave Woosley, the pastor of Grace Baptist Church, believes that the ACLU is “anti-God and anti-religious.” He promised, “We’re not going to start a fight, but we are not going to back up from one either. We are up there to portray what Christmas is really all about.”

    Cranston, Rhode Island

The ACLU has pledged to file a federal lawsuit against the city of Cranston, Rhode Island, to remove a display of a nativity scene from the City Hall’s front lawn. The display includes a manger scene, a large menorah, and 15 plastic flamingos with Santa caps on their heads.

Steven Brown, director of the Rhode Island ACLU, told reporters, “The ACLU believes that the city’s approval of the display of a Nativity scene and menorah in front of the seat of government—and immediately adjacent to a public school—cannot withstand constitutional scrutiny.”

Mayor Stephen P. Laffey approved each of the public displays, and responded to the ACLU’s threats by saying, “As everyone knows, both the Grinch and Scrooge had a change of heart when they found out the true meaning of Christmas. And even though Mr. Brown may say, ‘Bah Humbug’ to Cranston, we say to him, ‘Peace on Earth and goodwill toward men.’”

    Cedar County, Iowa

The Iowa Civil Liberties Union, an affiliate of the ACLU, has filed a formal complaint with Cedar County administration officials regarding a nativity scene that rests on the courthouse lawn. Even though it has a disclaimer advising that the display is not endorsed by any government entity, the ICLU has filed motions to have it permanently removed from its current location.

On November 4, Randall C. Wilson, the Iowa Civil Liberties Union legal director, sent a letter to county officials claiming, “We have received numerous complaints concerning this display over the years and are now writing to ask the county to discontinue the practice of displaying the crèche on public grounds, beginning with this holiday season.” Cedar County officials decided to ignore the ICLU’s request. As of yet, no legal action has been taken.

    Elizabeth, Colorado

The ACLU of Colorado, along with the Jewish Anti-Defamation League, sent a formal request to Les Gray, principal of the Elbert County Charter School, requesting that all references to Christmas be removed from all school functions. The ACLU went so far as to request that children be barred from singing secular songs, including “Jingle Bells,” in which there are no religious references.

The school employed the services of the Alliance Defense Fund and has fended off any threats against the Christmas season. In response to these anti-Christian efforts, Rabbi Daniel Lapin responded, “The ACLU is already notorious for its rabid hostility toward America's Judeo-Christian tradition, but the Anti-Defamation League, originally founded to defend Jews, should know better.”

    Baldwin City, Kansas

In Baldwin, Kansas, a local minister was invited to spread cheer at a local elementary school. While at the school, the minister asked a young child about the meaning of Christmas, and he discussed the birth of Jesus. Shortly thereafter, Douglas County Superintendent Jim White received a complaint from the ACLU, claiming that the school district’s actions were unconstitutional.

Mary Davidson, the legal director of the Douglas County ACLU, told local reporters, “I think this superintendent doesn’t understand the separation of church and state.”

Shortly after her comments, Superintendent White announced that Santa is not likely to be invited back to Douglas County schools. “We may not have any Santa Claus come just to make sure we don’t have any [legal] entanglements,” he stated.

    Norwood, Massachusetts

On December 5, the ACLU of Massachusetts filed a federal lawsuit against the Norwood School Committee for allowing the continuance of a more than 60-year-old tradition at Balch Elementary School—the display of the nativity scene. In recent years, the town has added a disclaimer indicating that the display is not endorsed by a government entity, but the ACLU argues that the disclaimer does not go far enough.

    ACLU on Religion

The ACLU says the government should never endorse religion. But what happens when the religion being endorsed is NOT Christianity? Two years ago, Arizona Governor Jane Hull issued a proclamation for a “Bible Week,” but when the ACLU threatened to sue, she caved in. Well, Governor Hull just issued another state proclamation—that celebrates the birth of ... Buddha. So what is the ACLU doing now? Nothing. Their spokesperson said, “Although we may think proclamations are inappropriate, they may not violate the Constitution.” So the double standard is official: According to the ACLU, their fabricated separation of church and state applies only to Christianity.

If we need any more, I shall be happy to go back to the 1920s...........Personally, I don't think I'll be saying "look at the pretty Fig Tree" any time soon.
    In Christ
    John

Sorry I led this post away from Kennedy.

But to briefly respond: Every single case referred to as an example of the ACLU's anti-chrisitan position is not that at all. Every case referred to is an effort on the part of the ACLU to prevent the use of public money, meaning legally collected tax dollars, to promote religion. It is obvious that many of you like the idea of public funds to promote YOUR religion, which for the most part, is MY religion too. I just don't want my tax dollars, or anybody else's used for that purpose. We can do the job without the government.

Overall I think Kennedy is a wonderful preacher and does a lot of really good things.

I also share the much lower opinion of Falwell expressed by some here.

I have met Kennedy but only briefly, and think his ministry is sound and well-rounded.

As Christians we need to guard our civil liberties. The ACLU far too often tramples them rather than defending them.

I've met the man. He's a wonderful and polite man. He's shorter than I thought he'd be, though. [IMG]
I agree. I like his messages, his approach, and his style.

The only thing I disagree with him on is his periodic moments of revisionist history. Also, I wish he'd talk about politics less. But no preacher is perfect, and I'm fully able to use the spiritual gift of discernment.

Bottom line is, he's a great man of God.

Most like it when men address issues straight on so to speak. I think that I ask myself this question and try to answer it while a man speaks: Try to hear what he is saying and is there anything that he consistently stays away from?
    Thanks -------Bart
