Blackbird, a robe makes perfect sense. That way you don't have to decide what to wear every Sunday.

I tried to catch what mine was wearing, but only got a glimpse of him on my way out the door. He always looks nice though.
Now, at an old church the poor guy used to used to wear things like green suits with yellow shirt and a brown tie, or some combination that screamed "I'm a 200 yr. old IFB preacher boy", and I'd have LOVED to have helped him out. LOL Where I was most people were farmers and never had much occasion to wear suits outside of church, so I think the way a lot of the men dressed was a result of having had the same 3 suits they inherited from their dads years and years ago. Up to date fashions weren't exactly top priority.
It was nice though, to be able to relax and not worry about needing fancy clothes to fit in, but when people outside the church started asking about my denom (are you amish, are you mennonite) I decided to get at least a few more up to date items. LOL
One friend had seen a pair of cute shoes on sale and picked them up for my youngest. She called me a few days later apologizing profusely for the shoes. I asked her to explain, and she was just going on and on because "I didn't THINK about them having little hearts sewn on the sides until today, I know you don't let your kids wear that type of stuff and I'm sorry I didn't think about it then, do you want me to take them back for you?" I was trying so hard not to die laughing, and explained to her that I had no problem with hearts sewn on the side of my daughters shoes, and that we wear plain clothes because they're more comfortable and much less expensive!

This is probably a little too high church for Blackbird, but it's classy:

    Anglican robe

The is probably the best choice; it's simple yet elegant, and definitely the right color.

    Geneva robe

Or maybe a hint of the Benny Hinn look would have Wesson buzzing:

    Clerical jacket

Most times I wore a Geneva gown and clerical collar. Weekdays I wear a regular suit with clerical collar.....saves on the selection of stupid ties. I do own a few ties for when I go to churches that frown upon gowns and clerical collars.

One day I will wear a loud plaid knicker suit with a yellow plaid tie and white shoes. Oh my!

    Cheers,

    Jim

PS, I am actually wearing a clerical collar in this picture, but it doesn't show.

If the preacher has to wear a robe... why not Church Uniforms so the rich people can't be told from the poor people? LOL!

Now there is a thought,,,blue blazers, with church crest on it, and gray trousers, argyle socks and black shoes, polished. The tie colour is optional, so long as it is red. [IMG]

I only have one suit that fits me - (It's my fault - I like to eat to much [6'-5" {5'-17" to make you short people, excuse me vertically challenged people fell better about your shortness} and about 285 lbs])!!! My other two suits were better suited (excuse the pun) when I weighed 40 to 50 pounds less.

That said - If the people in my church wanted to dress me for four weeks - and as long as the stuff fitted (dresses and wigs excepted) - I'd probably be happy to have and wear the NEW stuff. ;) [IMG]

The clerical collars look like they're made out of paper whenever I see them. [IMG] Seems uncomfortable! I've never been one to like things strangling me!
Do the women who claim to be pastors wear clerical collars and such? Or just change the robes to pink instead of black?

Jim1999, would the women wear gray skirts or would you choose different for them?
LOL You could make us all wear what we sometimes call 'the Holiness dresses'.... you know those silky, shiny and brightly colored homemade dresses from the '50s.

Now thank we all our God,
With heart and hands and voices,
    Who wondrous things hath done,
    In Whom His world rejoices;
    Who from our mother's arms
Hath blessed us on our way
    With countless gifts of love;
    And still is ours to-day.

My dress code. Just come and rejoice in the Lord, and be glad.

Some years ago, I had a woman ask me if it was ok if she came to "my" church without wearing a hat. My answer was, "I don't care if you come in a swimsuit, just come." (This was a summer resort area). Now I might have been taken aback had she come in beach attire, but the message was that her presence was more important than her attire.

I always wore a gown and clerical collar out of my tradition in England where it was customary for ministers. It followed in the military as a chaplain, where we followed the Anglican service. After that, I never gave second thought to it.

The Geneva gown is plain and black and does not expose street wear. I guess the idea is that people are left to concentrate more on the service than on what the preacher is wearing. Does it work? I don't know.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Well, thank you, brother RSR, you are very perceptive, I must say.......I polish my shoes too, but always wear white cotton socks.

    Cheers,

    Jim
