In this passage, where Isaac is speaking to Esau I have some questions...

    Genesis 27:39-40
    (39) His father Isaac answered him,
    "Your dwelling will be
    away from the earth's richness,
away from the dew of heaven above.
    (40) You will live by the sword
and you will serve your brother.
    But when you grow restless,
    you will throw his yoke
    from off your neck."

    1) Does this apply to only Esau, or to Esau's descendants also, the Edomites?

    2) If it does apply to the Edomites, as many commentaries teach, when did they "Throw off the yoke" from the Israelites? According to History, they just faded into what is now Palestine...

    3) Could some of today's Palestinians be descendants of Esau, and if so, could this passage still be prophetic? IOWS, could they rise up and break free from Israel? I am thinking now of a Palestinian state.. JUst thinking outloud....

    Thanks for your input.

I'm at work, and answering this from memory...which at my age is not real reliable.

This probably won't answer your question, but one little tidbit I seem to remember is that the descendents of Esau were later called Idumeans, and that King Herod was one of them.
