    Sounds like you may be going through what has happened in our church. They brought in the LOUD contemporary music. Most of the older people just stand there and watch for a few reasons: they don't know the songs, sometimes the LOUD contemporary beat is irritating making it difficult to worship, and some don't like to sing or can't carry a tune. A few people really can't sing, they just make noise; making it uncomfortable to stand beside them "singing" during the song service.

    I think what your Pastor really wants is for people to accept the new songs and beat, and is trying to force people to participate in the song service. IMO, your Pastor is way off base on this.

    I think you have the participation part correct. We've always played contemporary louder music though. We have all new songs with the new leader, though.
