It's interesting that 1 Kings 14:7-10 is just one long sentence in both the ESV and NASBU. It's broken up into 7 sentences in the TNIV and NLTse.In the ESV there are about 150 words in those verses.Only one period!However there are 11 commas;that does break it up a little but...

In Luke 1:5-24 I counted 15 times where the word And starts sentences.One verse begins with and though it's not the start of a sentence (as it is in other versions except the KJV).I'll give some snips to give you an idea.

V.5 And he had a wife
V.6 And they were both righteous
V.10 And the whole multitude
V.11 And there appeared to him
V. 12 And Zechariah was troubled
V.14 And you will have joy
V.15 And he must not drink wine
V.16 And he will turn
V.17 and he will go before him
V.18 And Zechariah said to the angel
V.19 And the angel answered him
V.20 And behold
V.21 And the people
V.22 And when he came out
V.22 And he kept making signs
V.23 And when his time of service was ended

The NASBU has And a total of 4 times.The TNIV has it only 3 times.

 

The TNIV doesn't go far enough in what ways?

I have acknowledged (if not in this thread,past ones) that the ESV is indeed clear some of the time.It's just the exception;not the general rule.

I'm a TNIV'er(not a TNIVO though,folks should know since I quote so many versions favorably).Obviously the TNIV can't be that magical translation between the NASBU and itself.Perhaps the ISV will be up your alley.It's about 87% complete presently.

 

Luke 19:41-44

First I will give the passage as it's rendered in the ESV.

And when he drew near and saw the city,he wept over it,saying,"Would that you,even you,had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.For the days will come upon you,when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground,you and your children within you.And they will not leave one stone upon another in you,because you did not know the time of your visitation."

The words "drew near" are understandable but archaic."Would that you" is really a quaint way of communicating."The things that make for peace" is quite an awkward expression.The ESV does a good job with verse 43; with the exception of "For the days will come upon you". In verse 44 the phrase "you and your children within you" is deliberately using an old way of speech which is certainly not in keeping with the stated aims of the ESV.What does "the time of your visitation" mean to the average person on the street?It's not clear.There is not even a footnote to refer the reader to Luke 1:68-75.

Now here is the TNIV wording for the same unit of verses.

As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, "If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace -- but now it is hidden from your eyes.The days will come on you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you."

 

What "very strange words"? Furnish some examples. Is "embankment" one of them?!
