Please excuse my ignorance, but what is an apologetic? And why are some early Christian writings refered to as apologies?

I can't answer your questions, but a friend of mine can. He's registered here on the Baptist Board but hasn't posted yet - I'll refer him to your topic! [IMG]

Apologetics is defense of the faith, or as Webster puts it:
quote:
systematic argumentative discourse in defense of a doctrine or doctrines

In this sense, to make an apology means to give a formal justification of or make a defense of what one believes. Quite a bit different from the usual meaning of the way we use the word!

    rlvaughn- thank you.

The way the word is normally used is what was throwing me off.

When I first heard that word until Brother Robert cleared it up I thought I was to apologize for being a Christian! Since he clarified the meaning I told him I've been doing this for 33 years and didn't know I was one!... Brother Glen [IMG]

It comes from the greek word "apologia" which means a plea, answer for self, clearing of self, or defense, according to the lexicon in the back of Strong's.

Think this is what the Webmaster envisioned when he set up the BB two years ago. Where we could help one another and learn from one another in a free atmosphere.
