    Universal atonement does not = universalism. You called universal atonement heresy. That is against Scripture...a heresy in iteself.

    As an administrator, I really wish you would set the example and leave the ad hominems out of these discussions. Vitriolic language is also against BB rules.

    Well, I never heard/read Dr. Rogers. The statement that "atonement" comes from "atone" was my own thought/statement/words.

    I think you need to re-think using the term "at-one-ment." It's a misuse of the word "atonement" and does not mean "at-one-ment." People may think you are siding with Christian Science or New Agers if you keep using this phrase. It's misleading to others.

    My view is that Jesus Christ atoned for the sins of ALL men, Universal Atonement.

    (Joh 3:14) And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

    (Joh 3:15) That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

    (Joh 3:16) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

    (Joh 3:17) For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

    (Joh 3:18) He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

    (2Co 5:14) For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:

    (2Co 5:15) And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

    (1Ti 2:3) For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior;

    (1Ti 2:4) Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

    (1Ti 2:5) For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

    (1Ti 2:6) Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

    (1Ti 4:10) For therefore we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those that believe.

    (Tit 2:11) For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

    (2Pe 3:9) The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

    (1Jn 2:2) And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

    Nuff said.

    Words have meaning. It irritates me to have to try to correct and correct and correct the ERROR that some keep spouting.

    Universal means "for everyone" and Atonement means "sins paid for, forgiven, taken away, propitiated"

    Universal atonement = universalism, that all men will eventually be saved because all sin was atoned for. This is HERESY and is a foundation of cults.

    It has nothing to do (and should not be confused) with a discussion of semi-pelagian v reformed doctrines of grace.

    Now if you want to use proper terminology, try "unlimited" atonement, that the POTENTIAL for atonement was not limited to the elect. Or "limited" atonement, that atonement WAS for the elect. Those are the correct terms.

    Theological terms have meanings. Since this is a theological debate board I suggest you look them up before throwing out these comparisons.

    I'll make a note to myself (it's too late to inform the late Dr Rogers). :laugh:

    I believe that scripture defines it quite well without the modifiers. In fact, adding the modifiers only distorts the scriptural meaning of the word as it appears in the text and in the context.

    I read a cute comparison: A man and woman sat at breakfast and day after day the wife would complain about how her neighbor would hang out dirty laundry to dry. One morning, as she looked out, she said, "Well, wonder of wonders! That lady next door has finally figured out how to do a load of laundry!"

    To which her husband responded, "No, it was me. I got up early this morning and washed our windows!!"

    ...and it irritates me to continue to have to correct and correct your errors as well. As Benjamins stated, words have meanings. Look them up and we can discuss further.

    From the opening post:
    There are two aspects to the atonement. The first involves its provision. In the provision of the atonement, there are two persons involved: The Father and the Son. God's righteous wrath is against all mankind and all of creation because of sin. However, Jesus provided a perfect sacrifice that propitiated God; or satisfied God's wrath against all sin. Completely. Eternally. Perfectly.

    This is the basis for preaching the gospel and it is the reason that preaching the gospel is never a waste of time. God's wrath, through Christ's perfect sacrifice has been satisfied against sin. We can and must proclaim this truth to anyone and all. That is our commission.

    The second aspect of the atonement is its application. The benefit of Christ's perfect work of propitiating God's wrath against all sin is applied to those, and only to those who believe. Within the boundaries of time those who believe are known as believers. In eternity, they are known as the elect. Anyone within the boundaries of time who will believe the gospel will be saved.
