Yep, and that doesn't even take into account the "sharing" that might have occurred with the Soviets, who were all too ready to "help."

Shouild be easy to find. It's well documented that the Soviets were ready to invade Hokkaido (the northernmost island) after they finished up in Manchuria.

    Here's one take on it.
    ...
Stalin was not known for his measured appetites. Why did he refrain from taking a large chunk of Japanese territory that would have given him a much greater say in the running of postwar Japan and, quite possibly, led to the creation of a Soviet-controlled satellite in Hokkaido, a kind of a “Democratic People’s Republic of Japan,” on North Korea’s model?

This also may be of interest: The Forgotten Soviet-Japanese War of 1939

In the summer of 1939, Soviet and Japanese armies clashed on the Manchurian-Mongolian frontier in a little-known conflict with far-reaching consequences. No mere border clash, this undeclared war raged from May to September 1939 embroiling over 100,000 troops and 1,000 tanks and aircraft. Some 30,000-50,000 men were killed and wounded. In the climactic battle, August 20-31, 1939, the Japanese were crushed. This coincided precisely with the conclusion of the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact (August 23, 1939) – the green light for Hitler’s invasion of Poland and the outbreak of World War II one week later. These events are connected. This conflict also influenced key decisions in Tokyo and Moscow in 1941 that shaped the conduct and ultimately the outcome of the war.

This conflict (called the Nomonhan Incident by Japanese, the Battle of Khalkhin Gol by Russians) was provoked by a notorious Japanese officer named TSUJI Masanobu, ring-leader of a clique in Japan’s Kwantung Army, which occupied Manchuria. On the other side, Georgy Zhukov, who would later lead the Red Army to victory over Nazi Germany, commanded the Soviet forces. In the first large clash in May 1939, a Japanese punitive attack failed and Soviet/Mongolian forces wiped out a 200-man Japanese unit. Infuriated, Kwantung Army escalated the fighting through June and July, launching a large bombing attack deep inside Mongolian territory and attacking across the border in division strength. As successive Japanese assaults were repulsed by the Red Army, the Japanese continually upped the ante, believing they could force Moscow to back down. Stalin, however, outmaneuvered the Japanese and stunned them with a simultaneous military and diplomatic counter strike.

Hmmm. I don't know if there is a relation in this matter, but I have met Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and even Thais, all were pretty cool and laid back. Kind, respectful, etc. Every Japanese I have met have been total fecal disposal units, either expressing hatred or looking for a fight. Every. Single. Time.
    No idea why. (shrug)

The MAIN reason japan was reluctant to surrender despite already having been militarily defeated everywhere except Japan itself, & Manchukuo in China was the Potsdam Declaration gave them no assurance that the emperor would be preserved. John Mc Cloy told Truman that such assurances would likely convince Japan to quit, but Secy. of State Byrne argued against this to Truman, saying it'd be less than the unconditional surrender the Allies demanded. Truman took Byrne's argument over Mc Cloy's, & the emperor wasn't mentioned in the Potsdam Declaration. tThis led PM Kantaro Suzuki to state they would "mokkasetsu" the Declaration, an unfortunate choice of words. It can mean "consider silently" or "reject with silent contempt". Several Japanese newspapers instantly seized upon the latter meaning & headlined that Japan had rejected the Declaration. That brought on the nukes.

We know the retention of the emperor, who served under Mac Arthur, made the transformation & rebuilding of Japan go much-more-easily.

A lotta people don't know that Hiroshima was rebuilt mostly with American funds & skilled labor to serve as a manufacturing place & point of departure for most of the American munitions used in the Korean War.

In order to destroy the present cultural belief system liberals first seek to destroy the understanding of history, creating revisionist history. When the Enola Gay B-29 was first put on display at the Air and Space Museum, revisionists presented an altered form of the event. However, the display first occurred less than 50 years from the actual event, thus eye witnesses and the children of eye witnesses raised such a ruckus the person in charge of the museum almost lost his job.

Try to find a book describing how mountains were formed before the advent of Plate Tectonics.

I doubt just ending the war quicker would justify the bomb (the second one, at least). Here they killed two birds with 1 stone (ended the war quickly and provided a demonstration of power to the Soviets).

The fire bombing of Tokyo night of Mar. 9-10, 1945, killed more people than either A-bomb, as well as leaving over a million homeless. Hirohito toured some of the devastation on horseback, & later said that was the beginning of his decision to end the war.
