He does a lot I don't like, but he is not guilty of the things you accuse him.

    Hello all,

Decades ago, I went to First Baptist of Auburn, Alabama. The pastor there at the time announced that evolution is true and the literal 6-day creation was false. He didn’t qualify it except to mock those who believed in a young Earth.

I have gone over the videos by Andy Stanley and I don’t think this is what he is doing. From what I can tell, he’s trying to explain to people that we are dealing with a society which is mostly Bible illiterate and has no clue what the bible is about. For this reason, when witnessing to potential converts we need to approach them like they really have no clue and not jump into deep theological arguements.

It would be bad to try to convert someone by telling them to start reading Revelation. I usually ask people to start by reading Luke. I know some like to tell people to start by reading John, but the book starts with some heavy theological concepts which aren’t for the illiterate. Luke was writing to someone who had little knowledge of the Jewish faith and was trying to explain what was happenning as if to a new or potential convert.

I’m pretty sure Andy was playing Devil’s advocate in trying to explain why so many people were outright rejecting God. And he recommends another approach in witnessing to someone.

Some people get jealous of the the success of other pastors. I think this is why Andy is being attacked.

    Marty

I am disappointed in people who take it upon themselves to be judge and jury over men of God. Your attacks are not Godly and not done in love but hate.

Whoa. The critique is from AiG. I said that I was praying for Stanley. AiG is not the only concerned party. The SBC Norman Geisler has attacked (your word) AiG as presuppositional in theology. Are you defending Stanley?

I have found this to be interesting that was said during the time of Jesus in Judaism.

From the “Sayings of the Fathers” (Pirkei Avot) in the Mishnah

1.13 He would say, "Spread a name, lose his name. And one who does not increase knowledge ceases. And one who does not study is liable to die. And one who makes use of the crown of learning passes away."

1.15 Shammai says, "Make your Torah fixed, say little and do much, and receive every person with a pleasant countenance."

Rabban Gamliel says, "Make for yourself a mentor, remove yourself from doubt and do not frequently tithe by estimation."

Notice how many churches encourage this? Very few make reproducing disciples but rather just converts. In the first three hundrd years the church grew rapidly. Over the years churches have found ways to make excuses for hard work and come up with programs to draw people in. Discipleship is not easy but it is the surest method. I don't know of a single person who has made reproducing disciples unless they meet with them one on one.

Paul attacked the Apostle peter Himself, and we are commanded by Jude to earnestly contend for the faith!

Wow now I read something from someone who makes sense. Thanks for your post you explained it very well. Many are quick to jump on the bandwagon before really checking the facts and finding out what is behind the story. I would venture to say they have not watch much of Andy Stanley. The saw the one program and they need to watch the whole series and then they would understand

Thanks for your post. Many talk in ignorance and haven’t followed him enough to know what he is saying.

When Jesus spoke with the Pharisees he used the entire Old Testament. When he spoke with the Sadducees he used the first five books of the Bible. That says nothing about what he believed concerning the Old Testament or Mishnah. It just shows he dealth with people according to what they had in common. When I share my faith with a city person I do not use farming terms. When I share my faith with a farmer I use words farmers understand and illustrations they can relate to. Any person who wins souls must use wisdom. It is amazing how people can say and believe things about us that we never said and don't believe. The early church had that happen from the outside.

Jesus Himself that the entire OT was inspired by God, were the very words of God penned down unto us, so why would Christians not study and learn them, as the OT was THE bible for Jesus and His Apostles!

Why would AS need though to hold to disreagarding the OT, to based the resurrection upon not the scriptures themselnes as primary source, and to seem to want to accomodate to modern culture?

He seems to be watering down the faith in order to try to reach out to "seekers"

I have never seen anyone who makes disciples as Jesus taught who does not study his Bible. When someone shares their faith and disciples others one on one they are asked questions. and there is a level of transparency that is far greater than teaching a Sunday School class or preaching from the pulpit. We cannot teach knowing God if we are not knowing God. If we only know about God then all we will teach is about God.

We study and use all of the bible, both Old and New testaments for that, correct?

The point is that when dealing with a specific audience, use of the O.T. is not an effective tool.

Even though Jesus and all the Apostles endorsed it?

Look at how Paul ministered eh Ephesus. Stanley is not saying throw the O.T. away. He is saying that it is meat that can not be digested by postmoderns until they have first been fed an awful lot of milk.

Except that we are to give forth the full council of the word of God, not just bits and pieces of it!
