As a Civil War reenactor I love to watch movies of that era - Glory, Gettysburg (I was in both of those), God's and Generals.

And lots of great WWII movies. Wow.

But another thread caused me to recall one of the most intense and powerful battle scenes - Henry V.

    So, your favorite is?

I have found the history of the Nazi occupation of Denmark and the Danish Resistance to be fascinating, and although not technically an historical battle movie, "Miracle at Midnight" is a family movie on the subject I would highly recommend.

And then there's "Sergeant York" of World War I with Gary Cooper. What a great movie, minus the 2 or 3 battle scenes (sorry Dr. Bob, I just can't get excited over those battles)

    Zulu and The Longest Day.

As for the last there is one English actor missing from the cast David Niven, a veteran of D-Day. He would have made a great Lord Lovat (the Peter Lawford roll):

Bob have you seen the Horatio Hornblower drama series? I really enjoyed it after buying it in a DVD box set.

I would love to see the Horatio Hornblower seires. I have read all the books and they rank amongst my favorites. Horatio is one of the most interesting fictional characters ever created.

I understand Captain Niven, RHLI, told the men in his landing craft:

Tora, Tora, Tora on the big screen.

Band of Brothers on the small screen.

Wonderful series. I wish they'd made more episodes. Which set did you get?

    Enemy At The Gates

Stalingrad (In German, with English subtitles, done by the same production team that did "Das Boot")

Cromwell (With, of all things, the drunken Catholic Irishman Richard Harris playing the quite sober Puritan main character, and doing a great job!).

    Tora! Tora! Tora!

All Quiet on the Western Front (The 1929 version, which won Best Picture two years in a row, and which was the source for all future war movies' characterizations.) It is amazing to see the quality of the effects in this 76-year-old movie!

    Patton (of course)

Gettysburg and Gods and Generals, of course.

Twelve O'Clock High (so realistic in its depictions of the mental stress on commanders that we used the movie as a leadership lab at Squadron Officer School in the Air Force)

And, I wonder why no one has ever done a movie on Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union. Hitler came "that close" to pulling it off.

    We Were Soldiers

    Band of Brothers

We Were Soldeirs was a good one as well as Band of Brothers, but I have yet to see every episode of it.

A great line from "We Were Soldeirs":

Let me put in a good word for The Beast, the story of a Russian tank crew hounded by mujahadin in Afghanistan in the early '80s.

Satire though it was. I've always enjoyed Kelly's Heros. Only in the American Army would enlisted personnel even dream of such an operation.
