The executive vice president of Faith Baptist Bible College and Theological Seminary in Ankeny has resigned following his arrest in a prostitution sting in the Kansas City area, school officials said Thursday.

James Collogan, 54, of Ankeny was charged June 12 in Merriam, Kan., municipal court with patronizing a , a misdemeanor. Collogan faces a $500 fine or up to six months in jail if convicted. He submitted his letter of resignation Monday.

Collogan said Thursday that he didn't want the incident to reflect poorly on the college, where he was employed for 51/2 years.

"It wasn't the school's fault," Collogan said. "I take full responsibility for it." He would not comment further on the incident.

Faith Baptist President Richard Houg said he was shocked and saddened by Collogan's arrest and subsequent resignation.

"Our hearts go out to the Collogan family," Houg said. "Sin has consequences, and the steps Mr. Collogan has taken are certainly appropriate, given the moral failure that has surfaced in his life."

Those affiliated with the fundamentalist Baptist school are trying to deal with the news, said Houg, who was not aware of Collogan's legal troubles before his resignation.

Collogan "has been a very effective officer," Houg said. The college has begun a search for a new executive vice president.

Faith Baptist, a school of about 500 students, is between class sessions and the campus was quiet and nearly deserted Thursday. The few people on campus declined to comment, except to express surprise about Collogan's arrest.

The prostitution sting was led by the vice squad of the Kansas City, Mo., police department. The investigation targeted escort services using the Internet to advertise, vice Officer Victor Zinn said.

Before joining the Faith Baptist Bible School faculty, Collogan was a faculty member of Bob Jones Academy in Greenville, S.C., from 1987 to 1989, was principal of Grandview Park Baptist High School in Des Moines from 1974 to 1980, and was head administrator of Grandview Park Baptist School from 1980 to 1987 and again from 1990 to 1993.
