My pastor taught that woman shaved their heads when they had leprosy, so did men. This was why it was a shame to them. It pointed them out as being unclean. They weren't let within the camp, they were untouchable.

    Sue,
A Christian woman is to cover her up her glory because the Word says to. In verse six it shows that it cannot possibly be only the hair as the covering.

The reason the glory is covered is because of creation and headship. We want God's glory to be seen in the symbol of a man's uncovered head. Since man is God's glory and woman is man's glory.

Man's glory is the woman. Instead of styling her hair to gain attention for herself she covers her glory revealing only to her husband. When the angels see that the glory of man has been covered and the man has his head uncovered they see the symbol of headship.

I believe this is also a rebuke to satans demons, they hate headship, authority and mostly ORDER.

After my first husband died and I was treated so very differently at church as if I didn't exist, I did a lot of research about what Paul was saying about women and wives.

Since we have had so many references cited that is supposed to support the fact that women are to wear long hair and then cover it, I would like
to quote some references that dispute this.

In my opinion, one must understand the problems that Paul was facing when he was preaching to the people and church of Corinth. He was trying to get the Gentles and Jews to worship together.
They had different customs and he was trying to compromise. He was using customs and illustrations that they would understand.

Two references: (I did have others, but did not keep them in my library)

One Book, "Paul, Women & Wives by Craig S. Keener. In this book, he discusses this subject extensively. He agrees that there is disagreement on the meaning of hair and head coverings, some take it literally and some take it as meant for the time. His stand is that it was meant for the time of Paul. One interesting point about the covering at that time is that he states that since men did not see much of a woman's skin that they would lust after her by her hair and that was one reasoning for the covering. The beauty of a woman's hair at that time was distracting men from the worship of God.

The length of hair does not mean the same in our culture as in Paul's time. In his conclusion, he states, " I hope that this chapter (of the Bible) will not be used by anyone to enforce rigid dress codes in churches today.......If our churches' dress codes turn people away from the church rather than bring them in, we have failed to catch Paul's motives or his message.

In another book, "What Paul Really Said About Women" by John Temple Bristow, he states: "Some customs have changed and hairstyles no longer mean what they did in the societies of Paul's time, his specific instructions are no longer relevant to modern Christians. However, the principle behind these instructions, of being sensitive to what message our dress codes and syles convey to others, still holds."

He stated in his book that the woman herself is the glory of her husband, and she should not shame him.

This subject is very confusing and as we see here on the board, people interpret it differently.

It is up to each individual woman and her husband as to how to follow these scriptures dealing with hair and headcovering.

No one should be looked down on for either choice, in my opinion.

And further, this is all I have to say on the subject.

I don't think these have anything
much to do with rebellion against God.

I'm still trying to figure out why this
topic concentrated on #8: "To think that
short hair on women is somehow ok"
Then this topic seemed to devolve into
a discussion of wether or not a woman's
    hair should be covered.

How does one express a rebellion against God?
How does one express a rebellion
    against their bulletin board?
Are these the best 13 sub-subjects that
    we might discuss?
Is fundamentalism a devisive argument on
    these thirteen subjects? I thought
fundamentalism had a lot to do with
    maybe the fundamentals of Christianity?
Wouldn't a rebellion against God take
the form of a rebellion against the
    Christian fundamentals?

    Color me confused
