For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

    Seriously...
Let's vow one to another that we will not post anything that is not subtance, during this political year...

No rumors, unless we have done our homework.
No inuendos... (I know I have been guilty of this in the past)
    No Slander based in stupidity...

And no picking on candidates body parts! (Like Obama's big ears) oops.

Let's keep our debates civilized, and too the important issues...

Because there is no time to waste on trivialities... when real things need addressed...

I am starting a thread on "NO Child left behind" in a minute...
And let's debate that issue for a while...

I vow to not be pretty... I mean petty!

Why apply this to Obama alone? Let's not discuss innuendo with President Bush. How about global warming. Even Senator McCain. Why should this only apply to Obama? I mean lets be consistent here which has been greatly lacking when it comes to Obama around here.

Fair enough. Could you provide some examples of where petty personal rather than substantive issues have been used against Sen McCain?

I was the first to defend him when the absurdity of his natural born citizenship was questioned.

All candidates should be open to criticisms on issues.

Any time a misquote, or fabricated quote is raised against any candidate I will oppose it if I am aware of it. I will do the same if they are attacked for their lives as a 5 year old child.

This is an election year, we need not involve Pres Bush at all.

Malik Obama confirms his half-brother Barack grew up a Muslim

<snipped>"Apparently the Obamas of Kenya have been reading those scurrilous emails to which Barack likes to refer, because they have no doubt -- contrary to the claims of the Obama campaign, that the presidential candidate was raised a Moslem. They take that as a given.

As the Jerusalem Post reports, "Barack Obama's half brother Malik said Thursday that if elected his brother will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background. In an interview with Army Radio he expressed a special salutation from the Obamas of Kenya."

The really fun part about an "anti-smear" campaign is that they will fight the truth just as hard as they will the lies.

    Probably even harder.

Well there is certainly one rumour they are fighting that is indeed a lie. It is this infamous "statement" attributed to Mr. Obama:

"I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction".

I believe that several posters here have referenced this quote. Perhaps they believed it was correct. But it is not. It is an intentional lie by whoever first penned it and by whoever uses it knowing the truth.

Here is the exact quote which, of course, makes no references to Muslims at all:

"Whenever I appear before immigrant audiences, I can count on some good-natured ribbing from my staff after my speech; according to them, my remarks always follow a three-part structure: "I am your friend," "[Fill in the home country] has been a cradle of civilization," and "You embody the American dream." They're right, my message is simple, for what I've come to understand is that my mere presence before these newly minted Americans serves notice that they matter, that they are voters critical to my success and full-fledged citizens deserving of respect.

"Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

Is the quote that you are referencing from the book Audacity of Hope, or is the another spoken quote?

It's from Audacity of Hope. If Mr. Obama indeed said "I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction" in another context, then I will publically apologize for the accusation that someone out there - the person who first started circulating this "statement" - is intentionally lying to us.
