Greetings, I am trying to do some research into the history of the title, "First Baptist Church", when it was first used, etc. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be most grateful.

    Blessings,
    Gordon

just kidding, but not really. Check out McBeth's Baptist Heritage and that might help. Or Baker's book.

==Roger Williams founded Providence and he did form the first Baptist Church on American soil. Williams was a separatist, not a Puritan, who was kicked out of Plymouth Colony and Massachusetts Bay Colony because of his "strange" teachings. Williams did not remain a Baptist. While I believe he was a true Christian, he was confused in his ecclesiology.

So the "First Baptist Church in America (Providence)" has rightful claim to its name.

As for the title "First Baptist", I always assumed that the name was reserved for the first Baptist church in that town/city. However I know of several towns/cities that have several first baptist churches, so there goes my theory.
