Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
    Leave to your God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: your best, your heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: your God will undertake
To guide the future, as He has the past.
    Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds shall know
His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness all He takes away.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord.
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Wilt thou forgive that sin where I begun,
Which was my sin, though it were done before?
Wilt thou forgive that sin through which I run,
And do run still, though still I do deplore?
    When thou hast done, thou hast not done;
    For I have more.

Wilt thou forgive that sin which I have won
Others to sin, and made my own sins their door?
Wilt thou forgive that sin which I did shun
A year or two, but wallowed in a score?
    When thou hast done so, thou hast not done;
    For I have more.

I have a sin of fear, that when I've spun
    My last thread, I shall perish on the shore;
But swear by thyself that at my death thy Son
    Shall shine as he shines now and heretofore;
    And having done that, thou hast done;
    I fear no more.
    -John Donne

I love John Donne! I have his complete poems and a smattering of his sermons. What a GIANT!

I was first exposed to John Donne in my undergraduate English studies. I studied him as a contemporary of Shakespeare. When I first read his sonnet, Batter My Heart, Three-Personed God, I cried like a baby. It is so true:

For I, except you [enslave] me never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste except you ravish me.

Aaron, amazing! I too love John Donne, I only wish I had more of his stuff. Do you have links to any of his writings?

What I especially love about "Hymn to God the Father" (what I posted above) is the double meeting of the word "done". It can mean "done" as in finished or "done" referring to his own last name "Donne". It makes the poem even more powerful if you make exchange of "done" with "Donne".

So anywaze, I'm impressed that someone else here knows about Donne. Let's see, have you ever read any John Milton? he had some amazing poems as well.

Who casts not up his eye to the sun when it rises? but who takes off his eye from a comet when that breaks out? Who bends not his ear to any bell which upon any occasion rings? but who can remove it from that bell which is passing a piece of himself out of this world? No man is an island , entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.
-John Donne (For whom the Bell Tolls)

"Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

There! I finally found the quote. I went from memory the first time. ;)

Of course I've read Milton. To be precise I've read Paradise Lost, and his poem about Samson, but I have not felt the kinship with him as I've felt with Donne.

Double meaning in Hymn to God the Father: Yes, absolutely. Done = Donne and more = Anne Moore, his wife.

I dreamed of a city called Glory,
    so bright and so fair.
When I entered the gate I cried, Holy!
the angels all met me there.
They showed me from mansion to mansion,
and oh, the sight I saw,
I said, "I want to see Jeusus,
the One who died for all.

Then I bowed on my knees and cried,
    "Holy, holy, holy,
I clapped my hands and sang,
Glory, glory to the Son of God

There are two more verses but this one is my fav. it is called I Bowed on my Knees and Cried, Holy.

    Give Thanks

Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One
Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ His Son

And now let the weak say, "I am strong"
Let the poor say, "I am rich"
because of what the Lord Has done for us.

    Give thanks [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

    Wake the neighbors,
    Get the word out!
Come on, crank up the music,
    Climb the mountain and shout!
This is life that we have been given, to be lived out!
    Live out loud!!

    I could only imagine
    What it will be like
When I walk by Your side
    I could only imagine
    What my eyes will see
when your face is before me.
    I could only imagine.

    Surrounded by your glory
    What will my heart feel?
Will I dance for you, Jesus,
Or in awe of you be still
or to stand in your presence, or to my knees will fall
Will I sing Alleluia or be able to be speak at all
I could only imagine. I could only imagine.

In the rush I hear a voice that it is time take the plunge
    Come on let's go
    Caught in the rush
In over my head I want to go
the river is deep, the river's wide, the river's water is alive
so sink or swim, I'm diving in.

Lord, I will bow to You
To no other god, but You alone.
    Lord, I will worship You
    Nothing hands have made,
    But You alone.
I will lay down my idols
    and thrones I have made,
All that has taken my heart.
Lord, I will bow to You,
To no other god, but you alone.

When you're up against a struggle
    that shatters all your dreams
and your hopes have been cruelly crushed
    by Satan's manifested scheme
And you feel the urge within you
    to submit to earthly fear
Don't let the faith you are standing in
    seem to disappear.

    Praise the Lord
He can work through those who praise him.
    praise the Lord
    for our God inhabits praise
Praise the Lord. For the chains that seem to bind you serve only to remind you
that they drop powerlessly behind you when you praise him.

Now Satan is a liar and he wants to make us think
that we are paupers when he knows himself
we are children of the King
So lift of the mighty shield of faith
for the battle must be won
we know that Jesus Christ is risen so the work is already done.

    Emmanuel, Emmanuel.
    Wonderful Counselor.
    Prince of Peace, Mighty God.
He is the Prince of Peace, Mighty God, Holy One.
    Emmanuel, Emmanuel.

Disclaimer: These words may not be exact, but they are what were dancing through my mind as I read this thread.

A Most Unlikely King (from Isaiah 53)

A righteous branch from David's royal line
    He came without a sound
A tender shoot, a holy root
    Out of dry parched ground
No stately form or majesty for us to look upon
And so we hid our faces from Him,
And called Him not our own.

    Chorus:
    Who has believed our report
About the Son of God, Yeshua
He suffered willingly for us to live eternally
A servant of the House of Israel
And we will seek redemption, call on Him
Oh, call upon Him and believe,
    Oh believe our report.

As a sheep to the slaughter led
    He went without a sound
A silent sheep He did not speak
    But willingly was bound
A mystery He was to us---A most unlikely King
    Royalty clothed in humility
    Salvation to bring.

    (Chorus)

    When morning gilds the skies,
    My heart awaking cries,
    May Jesus Christ be praised!
    Alike at work and prayer
    To Jesus I repair,
    May Jesus Christ be praised!

    The night becomes the day
When from the heart we say,
    May Jesus Christ be praised!
    The powers of darkness fear
When this sweet chant they hear,
    May Jesus Christ be praised!

Be this while life is mine,
    My canticle divine,
    May Jesus Christ be praised!
    Be this th'eternal song,
    Through all the ages long,
    May Jesus Christ be praised!!!
