Imagine my surprise when reading about Vista to discover that in about two years Microsoft is coming out with another OS.

    Anybody know much about this?

Do you think Vista is the next ME as some suggest?

Does it annoy you to find you spent $$$ just to discover your bought a glorified patch?

Probably would annoy me as much as buying enough one and two cent stamps to add to the out of date stamps I had on hand and then learn that in two months I'm going to have to go buy more of them to make up the new raise in postage when I still haven't gotten over the last one. Then I will have to go buy some others to make up the difference in the new stamps I just bought to have on hand when I get rid of the old ones.

I just can't get ahead of the postal service, why should we think we should get ahead of Microsoft :tonofbricks:

Or better yet forget Windows all together!

Where did you get this info? I gues Microsoft is waking up to the sad reality that Vista doesn't have the "wow" they marketed it to be.

One could just go for the best option of all (IMHO) and switch to Mac so you can use OS X, especially when Leopard comes out.

    Mac Evangelists  :)

How are you doing 4His-glory? :)

I came across the info on several techno news sites. Here is one site but there is plenty rolling around the web it seems on Vienna.

From a business perspective, the problem they have with Vista is that they pulled so many features out of it that would have made it a compelling upgrade. Without the improved security, net capabilites and the new file system, there isn't a compelling reason to spend the money to upgrade to it.

    I'm doing well thanks!

Interesting link. I also went and checked out wikipedia for informaion on vienna. I was a bit confused. It sounds as if Vista was supposed to be a minor release and Vienna a major release, but becase Vista was trumpeted as a major release, this will make Vienna a minor release. Needless to say I am a bit confused by all that!
Oh well, I am throughly enjoying my Mac experience, but I realize its not for everbody.

I am currently working with a company that may start swapping out their PCs for Mac Minis.
the only hang up was active directory access which we worked out on friday.

yes, they are not for everyone, but those who shouldn't use one is a shrinking number.

I agree, they are a shrinking number. I really can not find a good excuse for the home consumer to not switch to a Mac.

In the professional world excuses are disappearing as well.

BTW I think that when it comes time to get a new desktop it will probably be a Mini. Thankfully we have certified Apple resellers in Argentina.:type:

Perhaps, but I don't see business making a switch from Wintel to Mac anytime soon. In the last 2 years, I've worked for the 3 largest employers in my area (2 of these are very large companies I'm sure you've heard of). There's no way any of the 3 can justify making a switch from Wintel machines to Macs. It would be a painful and very costly switch to make and the benefits of making that kind of a change aren't big enough to justify it.

I wouldn't get too excited about Vienna... Vista was supposed to be two years after XP.

M$ has been making rumblings in the direction of modular operating systems, much like Linux is set up. Vienna may be quite unlike other Windows offereings (but I doubt it). I do know that Balmer has said that Vista is to be the last monolithic Windows release.

I think the strength of PC's in the variety of printers and other items that work with them is also its weakness.

At the moment Windows lump all the drivers and stuff in with the install. I guess they either have to completely abandon backward compatibility or make them downloadable on demand.

Anyway, something has to change for the size of the install to not be too dramatic.

Yeah. Windows has all these generic drivers built in, but every printer you buy comes with a driver disk.

    Go figure.

4HisGlory, you need to work on your self control. :)

If I did not have a meeting with the bank I'd take this further...

Though, while I am there I could ask for a mortgage to pay for a new Mac... (Couldn't resist)

Easy, because even though Bill is evil we get a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that we are upsetting the Maccies by having a non-Mac box   :wavey:

At least Bill is only evil, Steve is evil and bitter that Microsoft dominates. :)

Nah, he just knows that the majority is often wrong. And speaking of domination, Billy boy better do somthing special at Micro$oft if he wants to stop losing market share to Apple. Many people are "puting of the old and puting on the new" and switich to a Mac.

Nope, not me. I've got too much invested in my rig. Besides, I want to upgrade mine as I go, and I'm an AMD guy. Intel may have the faster chips right now, but AMD's new chips are coming out later this year...
