MSNBC Axes Phil Donahue's Talk Show

NEW YORK - MSNBC fired Phil Donahue on Tuesday, abruptly ending the veteran talk show host's return to television after six months of poor ratings.

Donahue's final show will be Friday night. The news show that precedes him on the air, "Countdown: Iraq," temporarily will be expanded to two hours to replace him.

MSNBC hoped "Donahue" would provide a liberal counterweight to Fox News Channel's competing "The O'Reilly Factor," but the ratings started poorly and didn't improve.

During this month, a "sweeps" month in which ratings are watched closely to set advertising rates, "Donahue" averaged 446,000 viewers. O'Reilly drew 2.7 million viewers, up 28 percent from February 2002, according to Nielsen Media Research.

MSNBC, made a poor choice in thinking Donahue could take on O'Reilly. Donahue was way to far left. I hear they are considering Jessie Ventura to replace him though Chris Matthews is by far the best MSNBC has going for it.

I would contend that O'Reilly and Hannity & Colmes are much more entertainment than news. (Same with Fox & Friends.)

I do miss Chris since he left CNBC, although Kudlow & Kramer is a very good show.

I am a Fox news fan. It is refreshing to be able to get a" fair and balanced" account of events. What is funny is to hear the liberals cry foul when the news is presented fairly. [IMG]

Seems to me they are much more edutainment than entertainment.

I watch O'Reilly and occasionally Hannity and Colmes. It serves Pro Wrestling's purpose for poli sci buffs. One has to love a show that features one man screaming at people he disagrees with for an hour while the other man sits there as lawn decoration. Fair and balanced!

At least Fox can't get any worse than Connie Chung...

EDIT TO ADD: It should be pointed out that real news is hard to find on any cable networks. Maybe 30 years ago, but not now. It's all about ratings.

If you think the news on fox news or any other controled news outlet is presented fairly, I have swamp land to sell you or anyone that believes such nonsense. 2nd Cor.3:17

Jameslef, have you ever watched Fox News Channel? Jesus Christ is King of all. Fox News is king of cable news. Small k.

rsr, Surf over to MSNBC - Chris is over there now. He follows the Donahue time slot.
