Fragments of Truth premieres April 24 in select theaters nationwide.

Dr. Craig Evans takes viewers on a tour of some of the most critical manuscripts for New Testament studies to present new evidence for its reliability.

In this quest, Dr. Evans travels around the globe—Ireland, Geneva, and England—in a comprehensive search for truth. In the process, he interviews top manuscript experts such as Dr. Dan Wallace, Dr. Michael Heiser, Dr. Larry Hurtado, Dr. David Parker, and Dr. Peter Williams. The insights of these scholars synergistically flow with Dr. Evans’ own textual expertise to set before the audience evidence of a trustworthy chain of manuscript transmission from the first century to the present day. The scholars separate fact from fiction in a compelling manner. From a review by archaeologist Dr. Scott Stripling

Never before has a documentary so comprehensively presented such compelling textual evidence for the reliability of the Bible. Evangelicals will find their faith strengthened through this groundbreaking work. Skeptics will encounter a fair and non-pejorative case that deserves careful study.

A Tuesday? Man, I would love to see it in the theater, but having to drive an hour to find a theater and then having it on a weekday is a bit much.

Three theaters within a half hour for me but I leave for work at 5:45 am Wednesday’s... it would be tough for me too.

    I’ll catch it on video

FRAGMENTS OF TRUTH is a Christian apologetics documentary about how believers, or any honest seeker, can know that the text of the Bible is accurate and reliable. The movie assembles many of the world’s leading Biblical scholars to dispel the idea that the text of the Bible has been corrupted. Each one speaks about his or her area of expertise to establish the age and authenticity of the oldest scriptural texts known to modern scholarship. They also lay out a plausible theory explaining how the modern Bible is a direct and accurate copy of the original New Testament written by the hands of the apostles.

The movie in its present form is actually a 73-minute-long documentary followed by a question-and-answer session at Houston Baptist University. The movie begins with its only recreated scenes, the scene depicts two scholars, Bernard Grenfell and Arthur Hunt, searching the Egyptian desert in the 1890s for lost fragments of the New Testament. Their discovery ushers in the modern era of biblical scholarship.

Regrettably, too many “theologians” and credentialed “scholars,” like Bart Ehrman, have used their intellectual efforts to throw believers into doubt about the Scripture’s authenticity. These professors have taught that the original text of the Bible has been hopelessly lost, altered by a powerful conspiracy of emperors and bishops, or exposed as a fraud riddled with lies and contradictions. The scholars assembled in FRAGMENTS OF TRUTH examine the evidence and demolish these myths one by one.

The documentary covers an historically sweeping period from the oldest surviving New Testament verses scribbled on brittle papyrus to the latest academic theories that try to explain away the Bible’s message. The team members (nearly all of whom have prestigious academic degrees) go beyond a stale recitation of how many ancient manuscripts survive. They discuss the logistical impossibility of changing the Bible’s text, how ancient scribes would have interpreted its supposed “contradictions,” and evidence from church history that the original text of the Bible survived long enough to be copied accurately in its form today. Along the way, they give numerous proofs that the Bible is trustworthy. For instance, Daniel Wallace of Dallas Theological Seminary tells viewers that a measly “one-fifth of one percent of all textual variants are both meaningful and” historically palatable and “approximately 70 percent of them are spelling differences.”

The documentary portion of the movie succeeds overwhelmingly in its most important task, that of taking the viewer on a tour of deep scholarship and proving its thesis, without leaving viewers bored, unconvinced or confused. The team of scholars, led by Craig Evans of HBU, surround the topic with a series of interweaving arguments, proofs and historical facts that leave the viewer with little alternative but to accept their argument. For anyone questioning the authenticity of the scriptures, FRAGMENTS OF TRUTH is the antidote.
