They are Independent Baptists who are hyper-Calvinists in their beliefs, which is what RC Sproul calls, sub-Calvinism. They are not an embarrassment to me because they do not represent me.

I'll be glad when Phelps quits siring more members in his "church." Making more offspring seems to be the only way that sicko can have a following.

If everyone would ignore them, they'd eventually go away.

They labeled him as a far-right-extreme-whacko, but they seem to be right there with the far-left-extreme-whackos picketing the funerals of dead soldiers.

Him and his ilk demonstrate a hatred I've only seen from either the Neo-Nazis or the Extreme-Leftists. But, people are always willing to hold them up in the media as "Christians".

Let me take back my last post. I have heard of him. I just didn't know his name or church affiliation.

If he was as intent on sharing the gospel with the lost as he is about his other efforts, he would be a soul-winning giant.

I think he's doing more harm for the church than good. But like Joseph said, he doesn't represent me.

Wouldn't be surprised if some or all of them were closet White Supremacists.

Kind of like a "Baptist" Warren Jeffs (and I use "Baptist" very lightly, and in name only.)

They're not really in the closet with those beliefs. A number of members are associated with the Aryan Brotherhood.

Hmm... "In addition to their anti-homosexual stance, the organization also possesses a strong anti-Catholic, racist, neo-Nazi, anti-American, and anti-semitic stance, picketing Holocaust Memorials in an attempt to downplay the severity of the event, and holding the belief that "Jews killed Christ." He is also openly supported by the "Christian Identity" movement (about as racist as they come.)

And there are quotes from Fred himself I wouldn't dare post on here. I guess the "siring" part could be gossip, or false witness, *but* I do see quotes from other Phelps' on the website (he does have 13 children) and pictures of his grandchildren holding "God Hates America" signs (among other less family friendly ones.)

I'd say that there is a good chance that a large part of his "church body" is most likely offspring or the product of offspring.

I didn't realize this, but I am not surprised.

I guess what I intended by the question "Is he an embarrassment?" is this is the image that much of the unsaved world believes is what a "christian" (lower case intentional) is.

I do disagree with the war in Iraq, but feel our soldiers must be honored both dead or alive. I find Phelps and his ilk offensive, but I defend his right to say what he feels he needs to say.

Phelps was a prominent civil rights lawyer for many years. Racism is one of the damning sins of America according to him.

And while he may be considered "independent", he is not IFB, his church is considered Primitive Baptist, although I'm sure most of the PB's shun him.

Well...he's about as "primitive" as they come (though not in the way PB's mean it)

Wonder if it might be more like christ to approach the man and his church ratehr than keep using the terms like: "well, he", "he", and "them"?

Otherwise this thread is totally GOSSIP:praying:
