Kirk Cameron, From Sitcom Star to Evangelist
Child Actor Finds Second Career Trying to Bring People to Christianity

    By MARTIN BASHIR, ABCNews.com

(March 17) - As Mike Seaver, the eldest son in the smash hit sitcom "Growing Pains," actor Kirk Cameron could make audiences roll with laughter. But now he wants to bring them to the Lord. And he's deadly serious.

The show, which began in 1985 , dominated the television ratings. Cameron joined the cast at the age of 14.

At first, he says, he was mesmerized by Hollywood and all the benefits that came from his newly acquired celebrity status. But soon he grew weary of signing autographs and a lifestyle that seemed entirely superficial.

The transition came about after Cameron reached his 16th birthday.

He sat in Beverly Hills in his newly purchased car and decided to pray. "I said, 'God if you're there, I want to know,'" he told Nightline. "'I don't want to be fooled or blinded by any sort of religion, but if you are real I need to know because I've completely ignored you my entire life. And if I die and find out that I am wrong about your existence, I've played the part of the biggest fool, and all of my money, popularity will not mean anything on that day.'"

Kirk does portray a christian witness in the Ray Comfort DVD 'Hell's Best Kept Secret'.

Kirk also starred in the Left Behind Movies based on Tim LaHayes books. Kirk played the role of Buck Williams, a newspaper reporter.

I cannot question his salvation. Only God knows for sure. All I can say is, if he is a christian, maybe he can make some impact on people through the witnessing technique he learned from Ray Comfort.

I have watched several programs with Cameron and Comfort. It is amazing to see their zeal and boldness in their witnessing. I wish more Christians had that same desire!

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here, SFIC. You cannot question his salvation??? What has he done (or not done) to make you even think such a thing?

From everything I've seen, he seems to be one of the most on-fire Christians around, and his desire to reach the lost is something we all should pray for.

Maybe you're not aware that he doesn't just "portray a Christian witness" in Ray Comfort's DVD, but he and Ray have an awesome ministry at www.wayofthemaster.com. Check it out when you get a chance. God bless!

he is one "actor turned Christian" I respect.

But I have to say back in the day when he was "Mike Seaver" I couldn't stand him... all the girls would go crazy over him... and of course being the nerd I was.... well, let's just say.. I was jealous!

Thank God he is on our side now.

from what i have seen, part of why the show declined was because kirk refused to do some of the things that the writers and producers wanted of him because it would have been a negative witness. he took a great deal of heat for his fire and i admire him for standing firm

Kirk Cameron is a strong witness and someone who is using His star power to reach the lost. His sister Candace, is a christian as well. You may remember her as a character on "Full House" with Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. She has not done any tv or movies since becoming a Christian, and in one interview I saw, said she was perfectly happy being a stay home mom and raising her children. It is nice to hear stories like this.

There is no way you can watch their show "Way of the Master" and not know that they present the clear Gospel unashamedly. Great guys. In the days of "seeker friendly" and positive, feel good christianity it is good to see two guys make a dent in the media that is otherwise overrun with Word of Faith teachers and pattie-cake preachers.
Funny how Rick Warren and Joel Olsteen stumbled all over themselves trying not to be too bold.Yet these guys were front and center.
Good for them may God bless them for it.

I was wondering about Kirk's sister.. I hadn't heard whether she was a Christian.. maybe she can influence the Olsen twins.

I still like watching Full House..
