Thankful, thanks for the explanation! [IMG] I just wasn't sure how to take what he said . . . mostly because I didn't understand what he was saying! [IMG]

    Thanks again!

IMO the answer is very simple. When you are convicted to follow a general or specific rule not mandated or addressed in scripture and you do it you are doing the right thing. When you make it a test of fellowship with other believers you've crossed the line into legalism.

    That makes sense. [IMG]

Well put Gina. I'd add that legalism would include a church or person forcing that conviction onto others and judging their godliness or Christianity on that 'rule'.

</font>[/QUOTE]I'd like to add to that if I may, that I think there is a difference between the intimidation of religious men and the intimidation of the Holy Spirit.

If that makes any sense. ;)

Anyone who zealously strives to please God is going to run the risk of crossing the line into self-righteousness, arrogance, judgmentalism, and condescension. We're still fallible humans, and our passion for Jesus can sometimes be misdirected. The key to avoiding this, I think, is humility, the recognition that I only stand where I stand by God's grace. There is absolutely no reason for me to think of myself as superior to anyone. Meditating on passages like Ephesians 4:1-6, Colossians 3:12-13, and Philippians 2:1-11 can certainly be of great help in this area.

OK, now how about the Pastor...

If he requires his deacons to wear a tie, his male choir members to keep their hair short, and the women Sunday School teachers to dress in a feminine way, is he putting his restraints on others ? Is the church becoming a legalist church ?

there are many places where scripture is vague, when it comes to day to day living. what exactly is modest, for example? or what exactly constitutes inappropriate worship?

is there truly no room for fathers with mothers setting reasonable standards for their home, or pastors for their congregations?

is it every man for himself?

So, you've taken it upon yourself to judge the hearts and intentions of these ladies? What difference is there between what you did at that airport concerning those ladies and someone else who judges the heart and intentions of of female dressed in clothing that is not entirely modest?

According to what you have just said, anybody who follows the Bible in how they live would be a legalist. Maybe I'm confused by what you said, or maybe I'm just a bit concerned that you say you will accept how others view the Bible if they will give you the same consideration, and yet you turn around and call somebody a legalist because they ARE following the Bible as they see fit. I don't know . . . maybe I've got a brain fog this a.m. and am just not following you.

And latterrain77, would you think it a sin or not for a woman to dress as a harlot (many of today's fashions give just that impression) even though she had donned that clothing just cause it was "cool"?

The Bible is quite clear that, by nature, long hair on a man is shame. It has little, if anything, to do with customs, etc.

Hello Julia, I think we must be carefull to take this in context. It is true that the bible says in 1 Cor. 11:14 "Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair it is a dishonor to him?" I have heard many a preacher jump up and down in the pulpit about that. But read on in verse 16 were Paul finishes up this thought with- "But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God. So it seems to me that Paul is clearly dealing with custom here.

Well, I praise God that our pastor has standards for the church.

The church at Galatia, that was a legalist church.

But I do thank you for the input.
