I tell ya - I'm seriously thinkin' on it! Electric version even and garaging the car for 6 mos. of the year.

Happened to be watching an enviro report on my late nite local news last nite. There's a company in Quebec called Enerkem Inc. (I'm sure there are others around the world) which is a leading gasification technology company. What that basically means is that this company produces ethanol (clean synthetic gas) from wait for it ----garbage from the local dump!! Just blew me away! It's so feasible, there's serious interest in this technology from around the world. What a fantastic idea; low fuel costs and using up all those mounds of trash we all create at the same time!! I'm going to be bugging my local politicos to look into this.

I grew up in Tucson...and I had a car without AC. I survived!

So I don't use mine here at all. And I have a 4 cylinder Ford Ranger that gets good gas mileage - I gas up once a month nowadays.

It's about 3.59 here. We're going on an impromptu trip next week up north about 8 hours from here that was more or less planned for us on short notice by immediate family members we rarely see, who are going to be in that area, out from California. My husband is also going to be able to see a first cousin who lives a couple hours from there and is going to meet up with us all, whom he hasn't seen in over 25 years. Because it's family, we're going to bite the bullet and go, and we're going to see some interesting things along the way. but it's definitely going to take a big chunk out of our wallets.

Our diesel is set to go through $8.00 a gallon this weekend and petrol (gas) is going to pass the $7.50 a gallon mark.

Prices at supermarket filling stations (usually cheapest for petrol) were £1.11 per litre yesterday. That is $8.28 per American gallon, $9.94 per British gallon.

Yup, we are catching up to you :). I usually convert to US gallons since most of the BB live there. For ages we ran about a dollar a US gallon behind the UK price, but the strong euro and weaker pound means that our price in dollars is going to bring us almost in line with UK prices :( in dollar terms.

Close $4.40 in city of Chicago - Wow! Last night, I drove on the way to work. I notice all gas stations, the prices are increasing up. several stations are now over $4.00. The prices are keeping up throughout this spring time already.

    C4K,

Are you missionary in UK, right?

If this continues I'll have to give up the internet at home (39.95 a month for level 2 dsl) and a few other extras in life. I'd love to get rid of the extra cell phone (another $30+ per month). Then there's the matter of 40+ channels of satellite t.v.. I have many channels but there are a lot of times I can't find anything worth watching. What a waste of $40.+ a month. Actually this whole deal may be a good thing. Life has become way too complicated. Maybe the high prices will bring some folks, including me, back down to reality, and back to learning to better to depend on God to meet our needs rather than our bank account. That $120.00 could be used elsewhere to include helping to fill my gas tank. Then again does anybody know where I can buy a good used horse?

Gas where I live is about 3.70 a gallon, here in Texas. I'm glad I have a motorcycle. I get about 50 to 52 mpg. I bet if I slowed down a bit I could maybe get 55 or 57, but I doubt I will ever find out.

Personally I don't find the increase near as bothersome as the increase in other things. Number one on that list would be health care insurance, and homeowners insurance. Those have gone up and affected me much more than the gas has. If you drive say 700 miles in a month and get 25 miles per gallon, that's 28 gallons. So a dollar increase is going to be $28.00 more in a month. That is nothing compared to what insurance premiums have done.

Really for the most part, we have been blessed in this country with relatively low gas prices compared to much of the world.

Was just going to say the same as Tim - hay prices are up too. My friend and I were trying to figure out what it costs to feed her two guys (one older horse and one large younger horse that eats a lot). Hay is $360 a ton right now and that's enough to last a month. The different grains we get cost about an additional $100 a month. Suppliments are $30 a month. Then you need to add in shoes ($75 barefoot trims or $150 for shoes and trim every 6 weeks), shots ($130 twice a year), wormers ($4 a month), and then board if you have no place to keep them.

A car that's paid for just might be cheaper.

Yes other things have gone up alot, however lets put the homeowners in persepctive. For those of you who don't know we had a house fire in Feb. To pay for the repairs it would take 216 YEARS of homeowners premiums to pay for the repairs. That dosen't count the amounts paid for personal property and for us to rent an apartment while we wait for repairs to be completed. Believe me your Homeowners insurance is well worth what it costs.
