Is it possible to give it thru your church and designate for a ministry? Possibly your pastor may have a recommendation.

    Yes. Compassion International.

    http://www.compassion.com/about/aboutus.htm

This organization is about rescuing children from poverty, disease, and spiritual ignorance.

The have a malaria initiative and an AIDS initiative, also.

You can sponsor a child and he or she will receive medical care, an education, food, and shelter. But best of all that child will receive the gospel of Jesus Christ and Biblical training.

I thought about this already but wanted to see if there might be another.
Should the local church be the only option?

It can't be the only option, because our local churches can't do everything because they don't know everyone in need and shouldn't be expected do and know it all. The individual Christian has a duty to feed the poor, cloth the naked, and take care of the sick as they go through their daily walk.

But giving to the local church should be the main option. The early church in the book of Acts was all about selling their possessions and bring the money to the disciples for distribution to those in need.

That would be akin to bringing any tithes and offerings to the local church and the local church body decided on it's distribution based on the needs of the local community and international community.

James White is in the trenches making a huge difference through apologetics. His ministry is my recommendation: http://www.aomin.org/

You might want to check out organizations that are members of the ECFA.

I'd suggest looking close to home for faith-based organizations which offer pregnancy counseling and other services (pro-life, of course); and those which have food or housing ministries.

Nearly all of the ones in my area incorporate the assistance with witnessing.

My recommendation would be to find a foreign missionary whose work you admire (I can name a few if you need help :) ) and direct contribute to them. Your money will go directly into action to spread the Gospel to people that need it and you'll be making a distinct difference in the missionary family's life. Giving to organizations is good, but when you give to a missionary directly you can have a great one on one fellowship with them and really feel like part of their ministry.

All we can afford to do is to give to our church at this time (we tithe so it's a decent sized amount of money), but when I was able to give more, I used to give to our local crisis pregnancy center (which is still being supported by our church so I don't feel AS badly about cutting our support) and Compassion International. There are a few other organizations that I know our missionaries are involved in and I'd probably do something for them too. But for now? It's just our church.
