Dr. Al Mohler has an interesting read on his blog today:

Back in June, I commented on the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s vote to "receive" a report advocating the use of alternative language for the Trinity. The proposed "triads" include "Rainbow, Ark and Dove," "Speaker, Word and Breath," "Overflowing Font, Living Water and Flowing River," "Compassionate Mother, Beloved Child and Life-Giving Womb," "Sun, Light and Burning Ray," "Giver, Gift and Giving," "Lover, Beloved and Love," "Rock, Cornerstone and Temple," "Fire that Consumes, Sword that Divides and Storm that Melts Mountains," and "The One Who Was, The One Who Is and The One Who Is to Come."

And the three men I admire most,
The father, son and holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast,
    The day the music died.

Obviously attempting to rename God is a big problem.

However, I do like the last one in that list just as a way to think about God, not to rename him. The One who Was , The One who Is, and the One who Is to Come.

That one is good if thinking of any one person of the Trinity or of God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). The problem, which, I'm sure is the reason for your hesitation, is that if used to name the persons of the Trinity it seems to smack of modalism at best...and at worst might imply the present non-existence of the Father.

Now, this may be splitting hairs, but these are my thoughts.
