Dear Brother or Sister, I cannot remember which, that passage proves Edwards contention.

God COMMENDETH... He shows his love for us. Shows it.

Why did Christ die for sinners? That God might SHOW his love for us.

That is the duty of love for man, not God.

Which interestingly enough begins, however, with this command- "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with ALL THY HEART..."

I Corinthians 13 must be speaking of this love and if God is bound to love based upon I Corinthians 13 which is to be consistent with the Great Commandment then God must love God FIRST and with all of his heart, soul, mind and strength.

    Which he does.

And you did not even adress the argument in the post.

Pick it apart if you can.

    no, Brother, it is not.

God died for man for himself.

    God loves man for himself.

Romans 5:8 tells why God sent Christ to die for us- that he might SHOW his love.

Ephesians 2 tells us plainly why he quickened us- "that in the ages to come he might SHOW the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus."

No, you are wrong in your interpretation of the Scriptures.

Read Ephesians 2:7. It will put the love passages in their proper biblical context.

The love passages are true. Ephesians 2:7 is true. They must work together.

They do. God loved us so much that he saved us so that in the ages to come he might SHOW the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

So you would argue with this statement:

God MUST always tell the truth in order to be God???

BTW, the weather and other providential hindrances kept us from coming down. We are still coming and looking forward to fellowshiping with you.

    Great quote.

If God took the approach some of you say He should. Then no one would know Him.

In our finite minds it seems conceited for God to magnify Himself.
But do you understand the very Bible we read is a testimony about who He is, and what He has, is, and will do.

How would we know how glorious He is if He did not talk about Himself?

Our Lord taught us to pray. Our Father who art in heaven HALLOWED be THY Name.
Everything else, in this prayer, is toward this supremely important end.
    His name being Hallowed.

Yes, it is the height of conceit for us to talk about ourselves in such grand terms.

But God must Hallow Himself. Or we would not be able to know HIM!

God must always tell the truth because He decreed it to be so not because He would not be God if He didn't. Had He not done so He would not cease to be God.

I actually like this answer- there may be something to it.

There are still myriads of things God cannot do BECAUSE he is God.

God cannot NOT be all powerful and be God.

God cannot be less than all knowing and still be God.

God cannot place infinite value on something that only has finite value.

Man has, at best, finite value. God must value most that which is most valuable- his glory.

Er, Brothers.....may I interject? This is what I was taught..... The accomplishments of Christ on the Cross. Truly on examination, one sees that our Lord accomplished much. :jesus:

    1. He was a final sacrifice for our sin

    2. He was a Propitiation for our sin

    3. He redeemed fallen sinners

    4. He was our ransom paid (our kinsman redeemer)

    5. He reconciled people to God

    6. He Justified guilty sinners

    7. He Sanctified (set us apart) for His holy use

    8. He Perfected us forever (Put us in the Lambs Book of Life) -- Read Hebrews 10:14

John Piper explains this so much better than I could:

"We are willing to be God centered, it seems, as long as God is man centered. We are willing to boast in the cross as long as the cross is a witness to our worth. Who then is our pride and joy?"

"The acid test of biblical God-centeredness- and faithfulness to the Gospel is this: Do you feel more loved because God makes much of you, or because at the cost of his son, he enables you to enjoy making much of Him forever?"

Another thought has struck me. Who are we to tell God what He MUST be? What He MUST do?

Are we not but clay? For anyone, even the author of the OP to say God MUST be one thing or another takes liberty with the sovereignity of God to choose for Himself how He wishes to display Himself to us mortals.

And Cals say us freewillers deny the soveriegnty of God.

I "feel" (know) I am loved because the Word teaches me that God's son died to redeem me. That is how I KNOW I am loved, warts and all. :)
