Director plans third film about Civil War
by RYAN C. TUCK

HAGERSTOWN - Despite the box office failure of Ted Turner's "Gods and Generals," director/screenwriter Ron Maxwell said he "fully intends" to adapt "The Last Full Measure," the final book in the series that includes the films "Gettysburg" and its prequel, "Gods and Generals."

"The Last Full Measure" is the third and final book in the series of novels by Michael Shaara and his son Jeff Shaara. It follows the action after Gettysburg to the Battle of the Wilderness, the siege of Petersburg and ends with the surrender at Appomattox Court House.

Maxwell said that "The Last Full Measure" has been optioned for production by Turner, who "is committed in his heart to do this movie."

The earliest that preproduction would begin would be in one year, Maxwell said.

During the filming of "Gods and Generals" in 2002, Maxwell said the only way "The Last Full Measure" would not be made was if he and Turner both died.

"I'm more than just interested as long as I'm standing," he reiterated Thursday.

It's how to get the movie made that is less clear, he said.

I hope this last movie [snipped] gets made. It is important for people to realize that the US has always been opposed to [snipped] Lee.

Daniel, please consider what you post before you type. Is that gracious enough from an Administrator?

You want to debate a subject, do so. But your continual slurs have crossed the line long ago and I will not tolerate them.

It must be truly a labour of love considering that Gods and Generals supposedly was a big failure commercially.

Dr. Bob, I have posted the definition of a terrorist before and believe that the South was run by them. They tried to subvert the United States Government through terrorism. Call it whatever you want, it was still terrorism.

I don't think they expected Gods and Generals to be a big hit "commercially". It was a great movie, and was made for history buffs and history teachers. I took my wife to see it on opening night, the theater was packed, we bought the DVD the first weekend it was released. I am looking forward to seeing The Last Full Measure when it comes out.

That you believe such garbage proves that you are a crackpot, Daniel David. May God have mercy on your benighted soul.

Ken, I hope I am not senile when I am your age. The North fought for an ideology that is vastly superior to the anarchy of the south. The fact that you are still trying to fight this war continues to warm my heart.

You do know the definition of insanity Ken, right?

Daniel David, this thread was simply to present information about a movie being produced. Presenting this information was not meant to be an invitation for you to exhibit your unChristian bigotry.

Daniel, before you throw any muck at me, I am pro-union--my great grandfather volunteered for the Union cavalry at 43 years old, and fought for four years.

However, your complete misunderstanding of the issues, complexity, and historical context of the War Between the States is not helpful to any real discussion. To view and judge the actions of men who were men of those times, by the standards of our times is simply not valid. Furthermore, your acerbic attitude toward southern sympathizers is unchristian and not appropriate for this board.

In and of itself, I don't find anything wrong with guerilla warfare.

My attitude regarding the south is based on years of study of the civil war and its participants. I completely reject the "states rights" argument that the south clings to. They picked a fight based on a false assumption. They lost. Bad.

As to the movie, I think the series has been excellent. I thought both movies were well done and worth everyone's time to see.

As a Baptist though, the south was completely misguided in their attempts at using Scripture to justify their positions. They have bad theology and bad legal understanding of the constitution.

It's lunacy, DD. By now you should be able to spell it. :(

Anyone else care to comment to the subject at hand?

So how did your great grandfather view and judge the actions of the treasonous* Southerners? Evidently, harshly enough to try to force them into submission and kill them if necessary.

*as viewed by the Northerners of the time - seems more harsh than nowadays.

You know, if the United States had lost her battles in the 1770s & '80s, she would have been viewed by England in the same manner as Daniel views the former Confederates. And, actually, many English probably even now view us "Yanks", or more predominantly our Revolutionary era counterparts, as traitors, terrorists, and guerillas.

The winners write the history books and the losers always look bad in them.

DD, the "superior idealogy" that the North supposedly fought for is a modern concoction to make the South look worse and the North look better.

How long was it after the war before Northern slaves were freed?

Did Abraham Linclon ever denounce his statements that "negroes" were lesser people than whites?

How many white people, back then or now, lived side by side with blacks, in the same communities, as we in the South do and did?

How many regiments in the North were integrated with both blacks and whites?

Superior idealogy, Daniel? Come on, I know you're not that brainwashed by our federal education system.

I can't change the way you feel about those men who fought for the South and her Independence, but perhaps you can at least see that the motives of the North for going to war were not nearly as noble as you would like them to be.

Now, about the movie, I happened to enjoy both of the first 2 <A TITLE="Click for more information about movies" STYLE="text-decoration: none; border-bottom: medium solid green;" HREF="http://search.targetwords.com/u.search?x=5977|1||||movies|AA1VDw">movies</A> and I am happily awaiting the arrival of the third.

Has filming yet started? Projected release date?

When, when, when???

BTW, same players as the first 2?

The north also had their 'negroes', except these were whites, who worked in sweatshops under conditions that will turn Jessee Jackson extremely white.

How many states were "slave states" in 1776? All of them. England even offered emancipation to American slaves if they would join in the fight to defeat the colonies. Are we going to revisit that war too and decide the "bad" side won?

Well, now that you mention it, England did have a fairly good point that the colonists should pay the costs of their defense from the French & Indian War.

NP,

Yes, it was, imo, a well done movie, but I don't think they expected it to tank as it did. I think they expected it to at least break even. Then again, in time, it will likely do just that. Frankly, I myself am surprised that it didn't break even at the box office. But I'm glad that they're going ahead with the film "Last Full Measure", and I look forward to seeing it.
